Atopic background in patients with occupational hand eczema

Abstract: Of 368 patients with hand eczema examined during the years 1978-79, at a Department of Occupational Dermatology, 39% had a history of atopic disease (dermatitis, asthma, or rhinitis). 28% of the patients had or had had atopic dermatitis. The % of atopics in the patient material was highest in the age range 20-24 years, in which 57% of the patients had a history of atopic dermatitis, compared with only 11% in the age range above 35 years. Of all patients with a history of atopy, 22% had developed allergic conta… Show more

“…However, the role of atopy in ACD is still questionable. A reduced prevalence of contact allergy in AD compared to controls has been reported (45)(46)(47). This has also been shown experimentally using dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) (53,54), in agreement with the concept that contact allergens preferentially induce a Th1 cell response and that patients with AD have a ''down regulation'' of their Th1 cells (55).…”

“…The criteria for the diagnosis of AD differ from study to study (46)(47)(48)52) or are often not given (45,(49)(50)(51). A comparison between different studies require the same set of criteria for the diagnosis AD.…”

“…Th e lack of an association with childhood eczema in the present study is inco nsis te nt with result s fro m othe r studies suggesti ng that childhoo d eczema is the mo st imp ort ant risk factor fo r hand dermatiti s (3,4) . It is possibl e that our study lacked the power to detect a pot enti al association, bec ause the study populatio n contained only a small nu mber of person s with childhoo d eczema .…”
