Atopic dermatitis-associated protein interaction network lead to new insights in chronic sulfur mustard skin lesion mechanisms

Abstract: Chronic sulfur mustard skin lesions (CSMSLs) are the most common complications of sulfur mustard exposure; however, its mechanism is not completely understood.According to clinical signs, there are similarities between CSMSL and atopic dermatitis (AD). In this study, proteomic results of AD were reviewed and the AD-associated protein-protein interaction network (PIN) was analyzed. According to centrality measurements, 16 proteins were designated as pivotal elements in AD mechanisms. Interestingly, most of thes… Show more

“…Itching is one of the most relevant symptoms associated with AD-like skin diseases and can be exacerbated steadily by inflammation, cancer, metabolic diseases, infection, psychiatric diseases, drug abuse, stress, and other factors [ 20 ]. An inflammatory skin environment lowers the threshold for itch stimuli and causes sensitization to itching.…”

“…High-throughput proteome technology, comprising 2DE and TOF/TOF MS, was adopted to provide the methodological basis for elucidating the skin aging process and associated signaling pathways [12]. The protein-protein interaction networks can be applied to predict signaling pathways that are activated or deactivated by different skin aging factors, as well as to identify transcriptional factors or lowabundance proteins that cannot be verified by 2DE [13][14][15]. We used MetaCore pathway analytical tools to dissect the global cellular pathways behind the differences in protein levels [16,17] In spite of some reports that have revealed the possible mechanisms mediating skin aging, no effort has been made to compare the protein profiles between intrinsic and extrinsic skin aging.…”

“…Furthermore, network heterogeneity, network centralization and shortest paths were 0.706, 0.207 and 11772 (100%), respectively. These values show that the network is assortative and roughly follows a small-world network (Amiri et al, 2013). P-value was corrected with Bonferroni step down (P-value ≀0.05).…”
