ATR IR spectra and structure of boundary layers of atactic polystyrene

Abstract: The ATR IR spectra of solutions of atactic polystyrene in chloroform at the boundary with KRS 5 glass in the ranges 2800-3100 and 1550-1650 cm -1 are studied. It is shown that the parameters of orientation Σ and polarizability anisotropy of macromolecules estimated from the absorption and refractive indexes and the average complex polarizability of polystyrene boundary layers on KRS 5 vary in an extremum manner with the concentration of polystyrene in a solution. For dilute polystyrene solutions, a high degree… Show more

“…In the FTIR spectrum of PS [Figure (b)], the band at 1585 cm −1 represents the C–C in‐plane stretching modes of benzyl rings. The peak at 1603 cm −1 represents the C–C in‐plane symmetric vibrations of monosubstituted benzyl rings . It can also be seen [Figure (b)] that there is an absorption peak at 1645 cm −1 , attributed to the d ‐limonene (C=C stretching of aromatic groups with the symmetric deformation of the H–C–H angle), indicating the presence of residual orange oil in the nanofibers.…”

“…3a-3c). The coatings prepared from dilute PS solutions (с = 0.2 g dL -1 [11]) are characterized by quasiperiodic distribution of polymer particles (Fig. 3b), in contrast to those obtained from more concentrated PS solutions, с = 0.4-0.7 g dL -1 (Fig.…”

“…According to the ATR IR data [11], with an increase in the concentration с in the interval 0.1-0.8 g dL -1 the effective thickness of the near-wall layer in the coatings prepared from solutions of PS in chloroform increases from 0.13 to 0.25 μm. Near с = 0.2 g dL -1 , there is virtually no anisotropy of the optical constants in the near-wall PS layer, and at с > 0.3 g dL -1 the anisotropy increases.…”

“…This characteristic was indicated by the bands at 754 and 540 cm −1 referring to the bending vibration and C−H out-of-plane bending vibration of aromatic rings, respectively [44][45][46][47]. The band at 1601 cm −1 was associated with the symmetric C=C in-plane vibration of the monosubstituted aromatic ring, and the one at 1583 cm −1 with the C=C in-plane stretching of the benzene ring [45,48,49]. The atactic nature of polystyrene (aPS) refers to its disordered, amorphous structure [47,49].…”
