Atraumatic Left Distal Radial Artery Aneurysm

Abstract: Distal radial artery aneurysms are an uncommon pathological entity in the field of surgery. Moreover, distal radial artery aneurysms of idiopathic etiology are even rarer. Herein, we present a rare case of idiopathic/atraumatic left radial artery aneurysm. A 73-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of a pulsatile mass located on her left wrist. Radiological imaging showed the presence of a distal radial artery aneurysm which was successfully surgically excised with subsequent ligation of the… Show more

“…Yamamoto et al performed a literature search in 2016 and found 16 cases of radial artery aneurysms in the anatomical snuff box [11] . We also found four other cases that were reported between January 2016 and January 2022 [12] , [13] , [14] , [15] . Notably, prior to the present case, the English medical literature only contained reports of three other patients younger than 50 years of age who had a snuffbox radial artery aneurysm.…”

“…2 Of those, true RAA account for a minority of the upper extremity arterial aneurysms. [2][3][4][5] Etiologies include idiopathic, autoimmune, hemodialysis access-related, and genetically triggered arteriopathies, such as Marfan syndrome but in most instances the cause is unknown. 6,7 Operative repair is indicated if the RAA is symptomatic (nerve compression, distal embolization, or rupture which is exceedingly rare).…”

“…True aneurysms of the distal radial artery are a rare occurrence, with fewer than 10 confirmed cases reported in the English literature. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Most radial and ulnar artery aneurysms are traumatic or iatrogenic in origin (e.g., hypothenar hammer syndrome or postarterial puncture pseudoaneurysms). A PubMed database search revealed only nine histologically confirmed cases of true degenerative RAAs.…”

“…A PubMed database search revealed only nine histologically confirmed cases of true degenerative RAAs. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] True RAAs presenting with ischaemic symptoms are exceedingly uncommon with only one previous case reported in the literature. 6 The patient has consented to the use of his images and case for publication.…”
