Background Using management competency-based frameworks to guide developing and delivering training and formal education to managers has been increasingly recognized as a key strategy in building management capacity. Hence, interest in identifying and confirming the competency requirements in various contexts have been witnessed. Therefore, learnings from how competency studies were designed and conducted, how competencies were identified, and strategies in ensuring success in competency identification are of great value to researchers planning and conducting competency studies in their own country. Methods A scoping review was conducted guided by the Arksey and O’Malley framework and reported according to the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). All papers that published empirical studies aiming at identifying and assessing manager’s competencies at the peer-reviewed journals were identified from Web of sciences, PubMed, Scopus and Emerald Management between 2000 and 2021. In order to maximize learning, studies focusing on health and non-health sectors are all included. Results In total, 186 studies were included in the review including slightly more than half of the studies conducted in health sector (54.5%). 60% of the studies focused on mid to senior level managers. Surveys and Interviews were the two most commonly used methods either solely or as part of the mix-method in the studies. Half of the studies used mixed methods approach (51.1%). Large proportion of the papers failed to include all information that is necessary to contribute to learning and improvement in future study design. Based on the results of the scoping review a four steps framework was developed that can guide designing and implementing management competency studies in specific country vs. sector context and to ensure benefits of the studies are maximised. Conclusion The review confirmed the increasing trend in investing in management competency studies and that the management competency identification and development process varied substantially, in the choice of methods and processes. The identification of missing information in majority of the published studies calls for the development of more rigorous guidelines for the peer-review process of journal publications. The proposed framework of improving the quality and impact of the future management competency study provides clear guidance to management competency identification and development that promotes the functional alignment of methods and strategies with intended uses and contexts.

Objetivo: Identificar na literatura científica como a liderança dos enfermeiros contribui para a qualidade do cuidado e segurança do paciente em hospitais brasileiros. Método: Revisão integrativa da literatura realizada no período de maio a novembro de 2019, nas bases de dados Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Base de Dados Bibliográfica Especializada na Área de Enfermagem, SCOPUS e Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Na síntese do conhecimento, uma amostra de 28 artigos foi analisada. Resultados: Do total da amostra, 21 (75%) artigos eram oriundos de pesquisas de campo, 4 (14%) eram revisões integrativas e 3 (11%) reflexões teóricas. Prevaleceram estudos no Rio Grande do Sul (39%), São Paulo (29%) e Santa Catarina (11%). A liderança mostrou-se como um meio (in)direto de contribuição para a qualidade do cuidado e segurança do paciente nos aspectos relacionados à comunicação assertiva e participativa, relações interpessoais mais saudáveis, inspiração de equipes e pessoas, competência técnica, autodesenvolvimento, aumento da produtividade, alcance de metas organizacionais, incluindo assistenciais e mais assertividade no planejamento, suscitando práticas de cuidado seguras e sustentáveis. Conclusão: Em hospitais brasileiros, a liderança do enfermeiro contribui para a melhoria da qualidade do cuidado e segurança do paciente, especialmente pelos aspectos relacionais que envolvem a produção do cuidado. Contudo, há espaço para outras investigações que extraiam a influência direta desta competência na enfermagem em elementos auditáveis do produto do trabalho.

Exploring Different Aspects of Nursing Leadership: An Integrative Review of Qualitative Studies

Context: Leadership is the process of influencing people to achieve common goals. In all nurses' roles, leadership is emphasized since nurse leaders' attitudes influence nurses’ job satisfaction and retention and, consequently, the quality of care. Objective: This study aimed to explore the scientific literature concerning different aspects of leadership in nursing. Methods: This is an integrative review of qualitative studies in which four electronic databases (Medline, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar) were searched. Articles published in the last ten years (2013 - 2022) were searched by titles using the descriptors "qualitative," "leadership," and "nursing" linked by the Boolean Operator AND. The search carried out in July 2022 was not limited by the publication language. A total of 63 studies were identified, and 11 original primary research articles were included. The quality of articles was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP). Qualitative content analysis was performed to analyze the obtained data. Results: The results were organized into three categories: (1) the importance of nursing leadership and leaders' roles; (2) ethical leadership; and (3) nursing leadership education. Personal characteristics of nurse leaders and leadership skills were indicated as factors influencing staff nurses’ attitudes and reflecting on the quality of care. Training in nursing leadership since the early years of nursing education is essential for future nursing leaders. Conclusions: Nurse leaders influence other team members and patients; consequently, nursing leadership impacts the quality of care. Therefore, training on leadership should be addressed in nursing schools in undergraduate and postgraduate courses and health institutions through continuing education.
