Sixty isolates of saprophytic microorganisms were screened for their ability to reduce the severity of grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) infection and sporulation. Isolates of the bacteria Xanthomonas maltophilia, Bacillus pumilus, Lactobacillus sp., and Pseudomonas sp. and the fungus Gliocladium catenulatum reduced germination of conidia of the pathogen and controlled disease on bean and tomato plants. Their activity under growth room conditions was good, consistent, and similar to the activity of the known biocontrol agent, Trichoderma harzianum T39 (non-formulated). Although the tested isolates may for nutrients with the germinating conidia of B. cinerea, resistance induced in the host by live or dead cells were also found to be involved. Inhibitory compounds were not detected on treated leaves. Sporulation of B. cinerea after its establishment on leaves was also reduced by the above mentioned isolates and by Penicillium sp., Arthrinium montagnei, At. phaeospermum, Sesquicillium candelabrum, Chaetomium globosum, Alternaria alternata, Ulocladium atrum, and T. viride. These sporulation-inhibiting fungi did not reduce the infection of leaves by B. cinerea. Most of these selected fungi and bacteria were capable of reducing lesion expansion.

Biological control of Botrytis cinerea by Clonostachys rosea is an alternative to chemical control of rose Botrytis blight in greenhouses. Environmental conditions affect the colonization of senescing and dead tissues by both fungi. The contribution of microclimatic variables to debris colonization/sporulation by both fungi was estimated by path coefficient analysis. We monitored daily values of: maximum, average, and minimum temperatures (T max , T ave , and T min ), and relative humidity (RH max , RH ave , and RH min ); accumulated rainfall; vapour pressure deficit average; hours with RH /90% (RH 90 ); and average temperature during RH 90 (T ave90 ). Association of variables accumulated between the first and seventh day before sampling explained colonization/sporulation variation: R 2 0/0.81 Á0.86 for B. cinerea and 0.91 Á0.96 for C. rosea . RH max and RH 90 were the main factors that directly favoured colonization/sporulation of both fungi. Colonization/sporulation negatively correlated with RH min , T min , and T ave for B. cinerea and T min , T ave , and T ave90 for C. rosea . The antagonist can suppress B. cinerea colonization/sporulation on rose debris under a wide range of environmental conditions.

Out‐of‐season tomatoes grown in unheated glasshouses in Greece annually suffer considerable losses from grey mould induced by Botrytis cinerea. Characteristic soft rots of young fruit by the calyx end, flower abortions and stem lesions or cankers are the most commonly occurring symptoms of the disease. Severe ghost spots on fruit only appear when fungicides inhibiting spore germination are not applied. Conidia produced on plant debris of the previous year's crop serve as primary inoculum. Disease starts in late autumn, increases rapidly during the winter period and ceases abruptly at the end of April. Infections caused by isolates resistant to dicarboximides or to both dicarboximides and benzimidazoles are uncommon at the beginning of each new crop cycle. These increase substantially as the season progresses and decline after cessation of fungicide sprays. By contrast, infections caused by benzimidazole‐resistant strains are stable throughout the growing season. Efficient disease control implies use of proper glasshouse covering material, adequate indoor air circulation, partial night heating, strict indoor and outdoor hygiene and regular fungicide sprays. When disease pressure is low, application only of conventional compounds like dichlofluanid and chlorothalonil is recommended. Under conditions favourable to Botrytis infections, mixtures of conventional compounds with reduced strength specific botryticides should preferably be applied. Such regimes efficiently minimize losses from fungicide resistance development and ghost spot.
