Attempts to introduce a system of national, racial and/or ethnocultural discrimination in codes of biological nomenclature should not be tolerated: Comments on some recent proposals (Wright & Gillman, 2022, etc.)

Abstract: With their article "Restoring indigenous names in taxonomy", Gillman & Wright (2020) initiated a discussion that culminated in a set of proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) by allowing the retroactive replacement of scientific names and/or epithets of plants and other organisms in favor of "indigenous names" (vernacular names used by Indigenous Peoples). Here I emphasize several main topics and questions critically important for the suggested implementati… Show more

“…Different politically motivated goals were expressed to this end. However, one expects unacceptable results from the new taxonomy implementations, from strong disorder to complete chaos, not to talk about moral losses [11][12][13].…”

“…The critical component of our proposal to formally accommodate indigenous plant names in taxonomy (Gillman & Wright, 2020; Wright & Gillman, 2021) relies on the application of the principle of chronological priority. Sergei Mosyakin (2022) claims in this journal that this will not work and, as an example, he points out that Moriori were the first inhabitants of the Rekohu/Chatham Islands, Aotearoa/New Zealand and were subsequently displaced by Māori. However, under our proposal the names given to endemic Chatham Island species by the earlier Moriori would have priority and would therefore be the names adopted within the Code .…”
