Abstract:Intermolecular interactions in ionic liquids are mainly governed by Coulomb forces. Attraction between cations has been previously observed and was attributed to dispersion interactions between non-polar moieties, hydrogen bonding, or π-stacking. In this study, we present the intriguing behaviour of tetracyanoborate anions in ionic liquids that, unlike their dicyanamide and tricyanomethanide counterparts, form dimers in both solid and liquid phases. A joint simulation and experimental study uncovers the origin… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
