Attrition Rates in a Brazilian Longitudinal Survey on Positive Psychology: Empirical and Methodological Considerations

Abstract: This study evaluates how sociodemographic and psychological variables influence the intention in participating in future waves of a positive psychology longitudinal research. Participants were 2551 Brazilian subjects (63% female), ranging in age from 18 to 82 from 21 different States of Brazil, which responded to the first wave of the research. Several constructs of the positive psychology area were assessed. From the total, 37.7% of the participants did not accept to participate in the next waves of the study… Show more

“…Only the data from those who concluded T2 evaluation (n = 88; EG = 54, CG = 34; female = 72; aged 49-86 years [M = 65.66, SD = 7.53]) were included in the analysis. The T2 attrition rate for this study (16.9%) was lower than that found (37.7%) in a similar national longitudinal study about positive psychology (Damásio, Golart, & Koller, 2015) and in a meta-analysis (42%) of longitudinal studies internationally (Roberts & DelVecchio, 2000).…”

“…Uma segunda possibilidade é que tenha havido um viés de resposta. Mulheres com altos níveis de bem-estar tendem a se engajar mais em responder pesquisas sobre o tópico, enquanto homens tendem a declinar a atividade (Damásio, Golart & Koller, 2015). Assim, é possível que as respondentes do sexo feminino tenham maiores níveis de bem-estar e atitude mais favorável frente à própria orientação sexual do que os homens, tornando-as mais propícias a finalizar o preenchimento do questionário.…”

“…A range of resilience enhancement interventions have been implemented in university settings demonstrating resilience can be taught (Brewer et al, 2019). However, many of these interventions have been stand-alone sessions delivered outside of the classroom (e.g., Damásio et al, 2015;Geraghty et al, 2010) rather than embedded into the curriculum. Embedding resilience programs into the curriculum aligns with first-year transition pedagogy (Kift, 2015) and has a number of other advantages for the university, staff and for students.…”
