Atypical Giant Hydatid Cyst at the Thoracic Wall Causing Bone and Soft Tissue Destruction: Report of a Case

Abstract: Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic disease that is common in the Mediterranean region. Thoracic wall, rib or extrapulmonary intrathoracic localization of the cysts is very rare. Giant extrapulmonary intrathoracic hydatid cysts can lead to both diagnostic and treatment difficulties and can be confused with tumor. We present a case of a hydatid cyst with thoracic wall involvement mimicking tumor. We confirmed diagnosis only by surgical exploration and histopathological examination because radiology is not conclusive .Su… Show more

“…1,9,15,16) Despite advanced laboratory and imaging techniques, in some cases a precise diagnosis cannot be established until surgery. 13,17) Costal hydatid cysts can generate multiple complications. Local expansion may cause pathologic fractures, spinal cord compression, thoracic aperture syndrome, pulmonary atelectasis.…”

“…Cyst rupture can lead to parasitic dissemination into neighboring organs and to anaphylactic shock. 2,14,17,18) The purpose of treatment in costal hydatidosis is to eliminate all parasitic and pericystic tissues, a similar approach to that of malignant tumors being necessary. 2) Compared to the surgical treatment of osseous hydatid cysts located elsewhere than the ribs, the treatment of costal hydatidosis has the advantage that all of the affected bone tissue can easily be removed with little functional consequences for the patient.…”

“…As to reports of HC lesions resembling tumors, various manifestations such as disseminated alveolar echinococcosis with bone involvement, peritoneal involvement and thoracic wall with soft tissue involvement have been reported. Although some challenges associated with musculoskeletal HC lesions have been documented in case reports and reviews, there are few published data regarding musculoskeletal HC lesions resembling tumors.…”

“…The most commonly affected organs are the liver and the lungs. [ 2 ] Pleural involvement is rare and usually follows the rupture of a pulmonary or hepatic cyst inside the pleural space. [ 3 ] The purpose of this study was to exhibit some characteristics of secondary infestation of the pleura as a complication of intrapulmonary echinococcosis.…”
