Atypical Pityriasis rosea

Abstract: Six cases of pityriasis rosea with atypical morphology and distribution of the eruption are reported. The eruption did not show a typical ‘Christmas-tree’ arrangement, confined to the trunk and proximal parts of the extremities. However, the histology of the eruption revealed dyskeratotic cells in the epidermis and extravasated erythrocytes in the dermis, which were recently reported as rather characteristic findings of this disease. Prodromal symptoms, course and response to therapy were compatible with pityr… Show more

“…Atypical variants of PR are rare and occur in only 20% of all cases. Atypical forms can differ morphologically or topographically 2,5 . Cephalic pityriasis rósea, inverse PR, unilateralis PR, localized PR and pityriasis circinada et marginata of Vidal are the atypical forms most frequently observed with regard to topographic distributions of lesions 2,5,6 .…”

Cephalic pityriasis rósea, inverse PR, unilateralis PR, localized PR and pityriasis circinada et marginata of Vidal are the atypical forms most frequently observed with regard to topographic distributions of lesions 2,5,6 . With respect to the morphological aspect, the lesions are described as the following variants: generalized papular PR, 7 purpuric (haemorragic) PR, 8 pustular and vesicular PR 6,9,10 …”

“…[15][16][17] We did not observe these features in APEC. Furthermore, the perivascular lymphohistiocytic cell infiltrate in pityriasis rosea is situated in the superficial dermis but is not perisudoral as in APEC.…”

“…It is normally well demarcated, 2-4 cm in diameter, oval or round, salmon colored, erythematous or hyperpigmented (especially in individuals with darker skin), and demonstrates a fine collarette scale just inside the periphery of the plaque [2]. Many atypical forms of the disease have been reported in the literature [3, 4]. …”
