BackgroundIt is a qualitative design study that examines points of divergence and convergence in the perspectives on recovery of 36 participants or 12 triads. Each triad comprising a patient, a family member/friend, a care provider and documents the procedural, analytic of triangulating perspectives as a means of understanding the recovery process which is illustrated by four case studies. Variations are considered as they relate to individual characteristics, type of participant (patient, family, member/friend and care provider), and mental illness. This paper which is part of a larger study and is based on a qualitative research design documents the process of recovery of people with mental illness: Developing a Model of Recovery in Mental Health: A middle range theory.MethodsData were collected in field notes through semi-structured interviews based on three interview guides (one for patients, one for family members/friends, and one for caregivers). Cross analysis and triangulation methods were used to analyse the areas of convergence and divergence on the recovery process of all triads.ResultsIn general, with the 36 participants united in 12 triads, two themes emerge from the cross-analysis process or triangulation of data sources (12 triads analysis in 12 cases studies). Two themes emerge from the analysis process of the content of 36 interviews with participants: (1) Revealing dynamic context, situating patients in their dynamic context; and (2) Relationship issues in a recovery process, furthering our understanding of such issues. We provide four case studies examples (among 12 cases studies) to illustrate the variations in the way recovery is perceived, interpreted and expressed in relation to the different contexts of interaction.ConclusionThe perspectives of the three participants (patients, family members/friends and care providers) suggest that recovery depends on constructing meaning around mental illness experiences and that the process is based on each person's dynamic context (e.g., social network, relationship), life experiences and other social determinants (e.g., symptoms, environment). The findings of this study add to existing knowledge about the determinants of the recovery of persons suffering with a mental illness and significant other utilizing public mental health services in Montreal, Canada.

O presente estudo acompanha as incidências da experiência de adoecimento na vivência de corpo próprio em pessoas que realizam tratamento em serviços de saúde mental. Por meio de abordagem clínico-qualitativa, interroga-se o papel do cuidado, do ponto de vista dos usuários, em uma possível vivificação da relação com o corpo próprio e sua contribuição na produção de novo modo de existência no cotidiano. Analisam-se as transformações vividas na relação com o corpo e as soluções encontradas para a sua recomposição.

Cultural pluralism and social diversity go through different social contexts in the contemporary world, exerting different impacts on official institutions. In the context of health care of a cosmopolitan city as Montreal, new projects of investigation and intervention are necessary, in order to assess how different population groups come into contact with such services.At the research level, it is essential to create interdisciplinary collaborations in order to examine the clinical situations in the light of the various constituent elements: social, cultural and ethnic ones.In this article, I present some reflections derived from interdisciplinary research among anthropologists and clinicians, whose central theme turned around functional gastrointestinal disorders in the pediatric population.This work in medical anthropology allows to document and analyze the speeches of families and children around the perception of that health problem, as well as practices and solutions implemented in order to relieve pain and achieve a welfare state.The main focusesI share in this article are theoretical and methodological references used in the anthropology discipline, which will be illustrated with the help of some extracts of interviews.Beyond simply listing the results of the research, I show an example of collaboration between anthropology and pediatrics, which opens perspectives for future research and applications in regard to relationships between families, communities and institutional healthservices.RESUMENEl pluralismo cultural y la diversidad social atraviesan diferentes contextos sociales en el mundo contemporaneo, ejerciendo diferentes impactos sobre las instituciones oficiales. En el contexto de los servicios de salud de una ciudad cosmopolita como Montreal, la realización de nuevos proyectos de investigación y de intervención se hace necesaria, con el fin de evaluar la manera como los diversos grupos poblacionales entran en relación con dichos servicios. A nivel investigativo, se hace indispensable la creación de colaboraciones interdisciplinarias con las cuales poder examinar las situaciones clínicas, a la luz de los diferentes elementos que la componen: sociales, culturales y étnicos. En este artículo, expongo algunas reflexiones que se derivan de una investigación interdiscip-linaria entre antropólogos y médicos, cuyo tema central giro en torno de los desórdenes funcionales del intestino dentro de la población infantil. Este trabajo en antropología médica permitió documentar y analizar los discursos de las familias y de los niños alrededor de la percepción de dicho problema de salud, así como de las prácticas y soluciones que estos ponen en marcha y con las cuales buscan aliviar el dolor y lograr un estado de bienestar. Las reflexiones que comparto en este artículo tienen como centro de interés los principales referentes teóricos y metodológicos utilizados desde la disciplina antropológica, los cuales seran ilustrados con la ayuda de algunos extractos de entrevistas realizadas. Mas allá de simplemente enumerar los resultados de la investigación, muestro un ejemplo de colabora-ción fructífera entre la antropología y la pediatría, la cual abre perspectivas de investigación y de aplicación futuras en lo que atañe a las relaciones entre las familias, las comunidades y los servicios institucionales.
