Audio AR to support nature connectedness in people with visual disabilities

Abstract: Figure 1: An auditory augmented reality system to support blind and partially sighted people in exploring open spaces and connect with nature by augmenting spatial and natural elements with audio and sonification. This system encourages multisensory exploration through non-visual interaction with technology and the physical environment.

“…Although some works employ natural images captured from unmodified environments (e.g., [26,27,28]), others exploit specifically designed fiducial markers (i.e., image markers that serve as references) that are pre-allocated in the space (e.g., [29,30,31]). “…Healthcare is a relatively new application domain of AAR technology. For example, a spatial soundscape that demonstrates natural elements in open spaces could be used to enhance people's connection with the nature, which could benefit their mental and physical well-being [148]. Such an implementation creates the illusion of staying in outdoor environments, which can be especially useful when venturing outside is not possible.…”

“…A second possible avenue of research would be to explore the role of O&M training beyond navigation and towards exploration of surroundings. VR and AR could help people build confidence in exploring, which could then be used in everyday life, allowing people to hear or smell something which could serve as navigation clues but also encourage exploration and connect with the environment [3].…”
