Audiological evaluation in patients with Behçet's disease

Abstract: The findings of the present study demonstrated that audiological involvement is more frequent in patients with Behçet's disease than in healthy controls. Therefore, all patients with Behçet's disease should be regularly monitored by an otolaryngologist and be given information about the possibility of inner-ear involvement.

“…Inflammation caused by macrophages, T lymphocytes and macrophage-like melanocytes was determined to cause damage to the inner ear and result in hearing loss 4 . There are many studies investigating hearing loss in various inflammatory dermatoses such as vitiligo, psoriasis, and Behçet's disease [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] . However, there has been only one study investigating the audiologic anomalies in AA patients in the literature 13 .…”

“…All of the patients in our study group underwent ear, nose, and throat examinations that proved normal. This study did not use the SISI (short increment sensitivity index) and Metz recruitment tests to confirm the cochlear pathology as in Ak et al [25], nor the TonDecay test to exclude retrocochlear pathology, nor the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test as in Mahdi et al [29] and Sonbay et al [30]. Evereklioğlu et al [31] reported that ABR, SISI, and ToneDecay tests produced no results when applied to Behçet's disease patients, so we did not add suchtime consuming and high cost tests to our study.…”

“…Sonbay et al [30] have shown that the age at the onset of the disease is higher in patients with hearing loss, and they have explained this with a more severe course in the early stages of the disease.…”

“…14 Hearing loss has been reported in various autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases, such as psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and inflammatory bowel disease. [12][13][14][15] Leukocytes enter from peripheral circulation into the cochlea in presence of inflammation in the body, and the accumulation of leukocytes and the local production of immunoglobulins causes an inflammatory reaction that results in the degeneration of the organ of corti, stria vascularis and spiral ganglion, leading finally to SNHL. 16 In general, T lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity, vasculitis and immune complex deposition associated with the circulating proinflammatory cytokines are the widely accepted mechanisms of SNHL that accompany immune-mediated disorders.…”

“…7 In literature, hearing loss has been associated with various diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, vitiligo, inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus erythematosus and Behcet's disease in the etiopathogenesis, of which autoimmunity and chronic inflammation play a role. [8][9][10][11][12] However only limited number of studies are available evaluating hearing levels in psoriasis, which is another chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease. 13 The present study evaluates hearing levels in patients with psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory disease, which is often accompanied by other comorbid conditions, and makes a comparison with healthy controls.…”
