Augmentation of air cathode microbial fuel cell performance using wild type Klebsiella variicola

Abstract: Simultaneous power generation and wastewater treatment in the single chamber air cathode microbial fuel cell have been enhanced by introducing wild-type Klebsiella variicola as an efficient inoculum for the anode operated with palm oil mill effluent.

“…Global warming associated with carbon dioxide emission from the usage of traditional fossil fuels is a great concern in the present century . Therefore, the demand of sustainable and carbon‐neutral energy is increasing tremendously, since it is less harmful to the environment . Recent studies have been focused on the conversion of bio‐based feedstocks to produce biofuels because of their abundance and availability.…”

“…In order to obtain the characteristics of the charge transfer resistance of different anodes after inoculation, the EIS experiments were performed and an equivalent circuit (inserted in Figure B) was used for the curve fitting. The measurement of EIS spectra of the bio‐anode could provide valuable information of electron transfer resistance of electrode during the cell metabolism process …”

“…The measurement of EIS spectra of the bio-anode could provide valuable information of electron transfer resistance of electrode during the cell metabolism process. [36][37][38] As shown in Table 2, the observed value of R ct for different bio-anodes decreased compared with those prepared anodes before inoculation. For example, as for 90-C bioanode-ED, R ct value reduced dramatically to almost 60 Ω and decreased by 99.3% ( Figure S4).…”

“…K. variicola has been reported to have not only lignocellulolytic activities but also the ability to utilize diverse types of carbohydrates (Jiménez et al, 2014;Dantur et al,. 2015;Islam et al, 2017). A. calcoaceticus and other Acinetobacter members can utilize diesel and lignin as carbon sources (Ho et al, 2017;Ghodake et al, 2009;Ponnambalam et al, 2011).…”
