Augmented Reality in Neurosurgery: A Review of Current Concepts and Emerging Applications

Abstract: Augmented reality (AR) superimposes computer-generated virtual objects onto the user's view of the real world. Among medical disciplines, neurosurgery has long been at the forefront of image-guided surgery, and it continues to push the frontiers of AR technology in the operating room. In this systematic review, we explore the history of AR in neurosurgery and examine the literature on current neurosurgical applications of AR. Significant challenges to surgical AR exist, including compounded sources of registra… Show more

“…It can provide more clear information and make the users improve safety and lower risk [38]. Although the visual reality and augmented reality in the dental field is not enough common, in other field developed much better, such as the neurosurgery and cranial surgery [39]. The users can use the Head Mount Display (HMD) display to see the medical information and images combined to the surgery [40].…”

“…Recently, surgical intraoperative navigation as well as preoperative surgical simulation based on VR, MR, and AR have been developed and successfully used in various surgical fields including neurosurgery, liver surgery, kidney surgery, and orthopedic surgery [47][48][49][50][51]. In contrast to 2D interfaces (e.g.…”

“…Over the past decade, with the advent of more advanced devices and technologies such as cellular networks and cloud computing [3], automotive networking and related applications have grown significantly. With the development of Internet technology, more and more vehicular applications [4], such as augmented reality (AR) [5], automatic driving, etc. involve complex data processing and storage operations, which require a higher level of data communication, computing, and storage.…”
