We study the couplings between collective vibrations such as the isovector giant dipole and isoscalar giant quadrupole resonances in tin isotopes in the framework of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory with a Skyrme energy density functional. These couplings are a source of anharmonicity in the multiphonon spectrum. In particular, the residual interaction is known to couple the isovector giant dipole resonance with the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance built on top of it, inducing a nonlinear evolution of the quadrupole moment after a dipole boost. This coupling also affects the dipole motion in a nucleus with a static or dynamical deformation induced by a quadrupole constraint or boost respectively. Three methods associated with these different manifestations of the coupling are proposed to extract the corresponding matrix elements of the residual interaction. Numerical applications of the different methods to 132 Sn are in good agreement with each other. Finally, several tin isotopes are considered to investigate the role of isospin and mass number on this coupling. A simple 1/A dependence of the residual matrix elements is found with no noticeable contribution from the isospin. This result is interpreted within the Goldhaber-Teller model.

This was the first symposium devoted entirely to spectroscopy in gamma ray astronomy. Its purposes were to bring together most of the scientists contributing to all the aspects, experimental and theoretical, of this new field and to discuss and compare ideas, measurements, calcu lations and technical experience in what we confidently expect to be a very important new discipline in high energy astrophysics.This goal was achieved, we feel, in that a very large fraction of all that is known about gamma ray spectroscopy in astrophysics was indeed presented or discussed at the Symposium, yet many of these results are new, presented here for the first time. Further, the discipline is on the brink of moving to the next level of development within the coming year, with a number of satellite experiments and major balloon experiments in gamma ray spectroscopy and in related astrophysical sciences about to be launched. We therefore felt that we should publish the Proceedings as soon as possible, without the delays involved in reformatting the manuscripts and extensive editing. We hope that the information that will thus become available will prove to be useful to all workers in these fields.We have ordered the papers approximately as presented, with experimental and theoretical papers combined in each session. The introductory session is followed by the sessions on solar, stellar, and planetary gamma ray spectroscopy, and on cosmic gamma ray spectroscopy, with the technical discussions and previews of new experiments in the last two sessions.The Symposium was organized by the editors of these proceedings, T. L. Cline and R. Ramaty. We wish to thank the Symposium Session Chairmen, D. D. Clayton, and M. M. Shapiro, and the Workshop Session Chairmen, G. J. Fishman and N. S. Wall, for their assistance. We are grateful to R. C. Reedy for supplying us the manuscript on Planetary Gamma Ray Spectro scopy which was not presented at the Symposium. Designed polyanionic coiled‐coil proteins: acceleration of heparin cofactor II inhibition of thrombin

Novel polyanionic proteins were designed to increase the rate of heparin cofactor II (HC) inhibition of α‐thrombin, an essential protease in the coagulation cascade. Two α‐helical coiled‐coil proteins, a 62‐residue dimer containing 8 Glu residues (E8C) and a 104‐residue dimer containing 14 Glu residues (E14C), plus two 31‐residue control peptides containing 8 Glu residues each (E8A and E8B), were chemically synthesized, structurally characterized and enzymatically assayed. Circular dichroic spectrophotometry indicated that both E8C and E14C formed stable two‐chain α‐helical coiled coils at pH 7 and 25 °C. The control peptides were only partially α‐helical. E14C remained folded at 90 °C but E8C was half unfolded at 49 °C. Coiled‐coil proteins E8C and E14C maximally accelerated by 35‐ and 33‐fold, respectively, the rate of HC inhibition of α‐thrombin. None of these compounds accelerated antithrombin inhibition of α‐thrombin, and neither control peptide accelerated HC inhibition of α‐thrombin. Acceleration of the HC inhibition of α‐thrombin showed bimodal dependence on the concentration of the polyanionic protein, which is consistent with formation of a HC‐coiled‐coil‐thrombin ternary complex. The results suggest that antithrombotic polyanionic α‐helical coiled‐coil proteins can be designed and synthesized and that the occurrence of secondary structure can be correlated with biologcal activity. © Munksgaard 1995.
