Autoimmune and Neoplastic Thyroid Diseases Associated with Hepatitis C Chronic Infection

Abstract: Frequently, patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) chronic infection have high levels of serum anti-thyroperoxidase and/or anti-thyroglobulin autoantibodies, ultrasonographic signs of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis, and subclinical hypothyroidism, in female gender versus healthy controls, or hepatitis B virus infected patients. In patients with “HCV-associated mixed cryoglobulinemia” (MC + HCV), a higher prevalence of thyroid autoimmune disorders was shown not only compared to controls, but also versus HCV pati… Show more

“…Another chronic infection by hepatitis C virus (HCV) is reported to take responsibility for an increased prevalence of malignant TNs, like papillary thyroid cancer. It is attributed to the inflammatory circumstance in the thyroid gland resulted from a range of inflammatory process induced by HCV infection [21]. Thus, inflammation, especially chronic, low-grade inflammation, plays a vital role in MS, promoting TN formation.…”

“…However, several works have suggested that the presence of these autoantibodies in chronic HCV‐infected individuals may be associated with virus‐induced pathogenesis. Thus, HCV infection has been related to production of ATG, autoimmune and neoplastic thyroid diseases . In addition, a variable prevalence of ANA (12–65%) and SMA (33–37%) have been detected in HCV‐related MC .…”

“…After adjusting for time of visit, Charlson comorbidity index score, and type of TCM service used, the hazard ratio of these comorbidities became less than 1 and was non-significant. This means the TCM-seeking behaviour is associated with extrahepatic diseases rather than hepatitis C. This finding might be attributed to the side effects of interferon-based antiviral therapy and the lack of satisfaction with the current conventional therapies [ 27 ].…”
