Autoimmune hepatitis in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection

Abstract: Background:Liver disease in patients with HIV is common and typically has complex and multifactorial presentations that represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is rarely reported in patient with HIV and the disease course and clinical outcomes for treatment have not been well characterized. We are aiming to determine the patient characteristics, disease prevalence, and treatment outcomes from published articles of patients with HIV and AIH.Method:A systematic search of Pu… Show more

“…Recently Human Immunode iciency Virus (HIV) infection has been implicated as a possible cause of AIH in genetically susceptible individuals. This is an observation based on individual casereports and reviews [10,11]. Larger studies are needed to support this observation.…”

“…Long-standing HIV infection results in a gradual diminution of humoral immunity owing to a consistent reduction in the CD4+ T-cell count. Compensatory stimulation of B-Cell proliferation with the increased production of immunoglobulins (mostly abnormal) occurs, and this dysregulated immune mechanism may increase the likelihood of autoimmune disease development [ 1 ]. HIV infection may evoke autoantibody production as there is structural antigen simulation between HIV proteins and self-antigens.…”

“…Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was initially described in the year 1981. Since then, breakthrough advancements have taken place in the diagnostic and therapeutic protocols, thereby influencing the disease prognosis and prevalence [ 1 ]. Over the years, HIV infection has emerged as a universal public health menace.…”

“…AIH during HIV infection has rarely been recognized and existing literature remains scarce [ 13 , 14 ]. It has been mainly reported during immune reconstitution [ 15 ] or immunovirological control with ART [ 1 ].…”

“…It has been mainly reported during immune reconstitution [ 15 ] or immunovirological control with ART [ 1 ]. It is notable that no epidemiological data exist on AIH in HIV-infected patients in the United States [ 14 ]. Due to the increasing prevalence and disease burden, we aimed to study AIH in HIV-infected patients using a large population-based database.…”
