Autoimmune thyroid disease correlates to islet autoimmunity on zinc transporter 8 autoantibody

Abstract: Objective: The most common coexisting organ-specific autoimmune disease in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD). However, there have been little clinical reports based on large population about the prevalence of zinc transporter 8 autoantibody (ZnT8A) and other islet autoantibodies in AITD patients. We aimed to explore the presence of islet autoantibodies, ZnT8A, glutamic acid decarboxylase autoantibodies (GADA) and insulinoma-associated antigen 2 autoantibodies (I… Show more

“…In addition to hyperglycemia complications, there is a likelihood of other serious complications that are associated with T1D, such as diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) [1]. Moreover, individuals with type 1 diabetes are also susceptible to other conditions, such as celiac disease, vitiligo, Addison's disease, and thyroid autoimmunity [2].…”

“…Individuals with T1D are also more susceptible to other autoimmune diseases, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, coeliac disease, Addison's disease, vitiligo, and myasthenia gravis [1,5]. Moreover, the association of T1D with thyroid autoimmunity and coeliac disease may also be mechanistically determined [6][7][8].…”
