Automated biopsy devices: a blinded evaluation.

Abstract: To evaluate 20 different automated biopsy devices with respect to the quality of tissue obtained for histopathologic analysis, a total of 1,470 18-gauge biopsy specimens were obtained from 10 fresh autopsy cases, including 30 liver, 20 kidney, 10 pancreas, and 10 psoas muscle biopsy specimens per device and per biopsy depth. There was no statistical difference in the performance of the long-throw Biopty, ASAP 18, 1.9-cm UltraCut, long-throw Monopty, and 2.5-cm ABS biopsy guns. All obtained a large amount of ti… Show more

“…This device is a recent version of an automated biopsy system, which has proven effective for fine-needle percutaneous biopsies of various tissues, such as liver, kidney, pancreas, prostate, uterus, and psoas muscle [16], and for the diagnosis of musculoskeletal sarcomas [10]. The current authors also used 16-gauge core disposable biopsy needles (Magnum 1 Needle, MN1610; Bard; length of the sampling notch 19 mm; course 22 mm) and an insertion cannula (a 14-gauge i.v.…”

“…Although extensive evaluations have shown the utility of the biopsy gun with the side-notch design, only a few researchers have attempted to evaluate the utility of the end-cut design [1][2][3].…”

“…1). Although the Autovac obtains high-quality specimens that are at least equivalent, and in some cases superior, to those obtained with the sidenotch devices, it is limited by shorter throw lengths (1-2 cm) and by a high proportion of zero biopsies, during which no tissue is obtained [1][2][3].…”

“…eosin. An experienced pathologist graded the specimens in a blinded fashion by using a predetermined grading scheme [1]. This grading system evaluates the tissue fragmentation, crush artifact, and adequacy of tissue for diagnosis and assigns a total histopathologic score.…”
