Automated cerebellar lobule segmentation with application to cerebellar structural analysis in cerebellar disease

Abstract: The cerebellum plays an important role in both motor control and cognitive function. Cerebellar function is topographically organized and diseases that affect specific parts of the cerebellum are associated with specific patterns of symptoms. Accordingly, delineation and quantification of cerebellar sub-regions from magnetic resonance images are important in the study of cerebellar atrophy and associated functional losses. This paper describes an automated cerebellar lobule segmentation method based on a graph… Show more

“…The functional topography of the cerebellum has been well established by both functional and structural studies in healthy and clinical populations [21,24,[40][41][42][43][44][45]. A detailed mapping of motor and cognitive dysfunctions linking to specific cerebellar lobules has been proposed in a large cohort of patients with mixed subtypes of cerebellar neurodegenerative disease [45] using the automated cerebellar lobular segmentation proposed by Yang and colleagues (2016) [46].…”

“…Freesurfer v5.3.0 was applied to the skull stripped MRI to segment the cerebellum. This label map was further refined using the cerebellar lobule segmentation tool, which parcellated the cerebellum into the corpus medullare and 21 cerebellar lobules according to an atlas . The segmentation accuracy associated with cerebellar gray matter was greatly affected by low‐intensity contrast of the images .…”

“…The cerebellum was segmented from the MR image and parcellated into 22 cerebellar sub-structures defined in Sec. 2.1, using the method proposed in Yang et al (2013) 15 . A dense triangulation of the boundary surface of each lobule was generated by the marching cubes algorithm 16 .…”
