Fixture design is an important issue in the process of manufacturing. As a critical design activity process, automation in fixture design plays an integral role in linking computer aided designs and computer aided manufacturing. This paper carries out a literature review of computer aided fixture design (CAFD) developments using intelligent methods that have been commonly utilized in automation in the last two decades. The first part of this review considers the steps of fixture design along with the significant researches and requirements of fixtures over time. After that, the paper presents important and relevant research carried out in the field of CAFD using intelligent approaches and the working principles surrounding this issue. The following section concentrates on the details of case based reasoning (CBR) approach, the most successful approach in CAFD. The examination of this approach is carried out based on applications, stages of CBR based systems fixture design, working principles, and pertinent proposed approaches. Lastly, the present drawbacks of the current methods and shortfalls in research are identified for future studies.

A modular fixture system is a flexible alternative to a dedicated fixture. In this paper, an automatic modular fixture design system is suggested for creating prismatic parts. The system contains fixture planning, fixture modelling, and fixture assembly. The part geometrical database and process plans are considered as inputs to the system. A rulebased method is applied to assign the feasible locating scheme and the locating and clamping datum. The search strategy is designed to determine the most suitable locating and clamping points. The final fixture assembly is made with the standard fixture components using the CATVBA Editor inside CATIAV5. The proposed methodology is successfully validated with a case study. OPSOMMING'n Aanpasbare hegtingsisteem is 'n buigsame alternatief vir 'n toegewyde hegstuk. 'n Outomatiese aanpasbare hegstuk ontwerpsisteem vir die skep van prismatiese onderdele word voorgestel. Die sisteem bevat hegstuk beplanning, hegstuk modellering en hegstuk samestelling. Die onderdeel geometriese databasis en proses planne word as insette gebruik. A reëlgebaseerde metode is toegepas om die opsporings en vasklem verwysingspunte toe te ken. Die soekstrategie is ontwerp om die mees geskikte verwysingsen klempunte te bepaal. Die finale hegstuk samestelling is gemaak van die standaard hegstuk komponente van die CATVBA Editor van CATIAV5. Die voorgestelde benadering is suksesvol gevalideer deur middel van 'n gevallestudie.

An efficient algorithm for computing object poses in a modular fixture or gripper

Modular or reconfigurable fixtures (or grippers) can reduce manufacturing costs and time remarkably. Computing the poses of a given object in a modular fixture is a basic but tedious technique for designing and using such fixtures. This article presents an efficient algorithm for computing the poses. Starting from a unified expression of the outline of an object, this algorithm searches all matching poses automatically. If the outline consists of straight lines and circular arcs only, all the unknown variables can be calculated sequentially by substituting known (or tentative) data in respective expressions, without solving complicated simultaneous equations. When applied to arbitrary outlines, it involves nothing more than common interpolation. The search process is visualized through diagrams that clearly display the occurrence of matching poses. The computer programs are universally applicable. Only the data of the object outline and the fixture configuration need be input. Case studies show that the programs run fast and yield accurate results. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
