Automatic calculation of the magnetometer zero offset using the interplanetary magnetic field based on the Wang–Pan method

Abstract: The space-borne fluxgate magnetometer (FGM) needs regular in-flight calibration to obtain its zero offset. Recently, a new method based on the properties of Alfvén waves for the zero offset calibration was developed by Wang GQ and Pan ZH (2021a). They found that there exists an optimal offset line (OOL) in the offset cube for might also be applied to find fluctuation events for the Davis-Smith method.

“…To test whether the zero offset determined by the Wang method II is reliable or not, we compare it to the zero offset determined by the Wang‐Pan method I. The calculation procedure of the Wang‐Pan method I follows the procedure proposed by Hu, Wang, Pan, and Pan (2022). The fluctuation event is considered to be a potential Alfvénic fluctuation event if at least one point in the offset cube has a value of δBT/δBX2+δBY2+δBZ2 $\delta {B}_{\mathrm{T}}/\sqrt{{\delta B}_{\mathrm{X}}^{2}+{\delta B}_{\mathrm{Y}}^{2}{+\delta B}_{\mathrm{Z}}^{2}}$ < 0.3, where δ B X , δ B Y , δ B Z , and δ B T are the standard deviations of B X , B Y , B Z , and B T , respectively.…”

“…The Wang-Pan method I is based on the properties of the Alfvén waves, and reduces the possible range of the zero offset from the whole offset cube to a straight line when using one wave event (Wang & Pan 2021a;Hu et al 2022). This line is called the optimal offset line (OOL).…”
