More and more companies are implementing the RPA (Robotic Process Automation) tools that belong to the newly emerging category of IT solutions used to automate business processes and enable the development of the so-called software robots. The term robot has a metaphorical meaning here – it is a special kind of software, not a device. Due to the fact that this is a new product category and many companies do not have extensive experience in this area yet, the use of the RPA tools is associated with many risks. At the same time, due to the increasingly competitive environment, it seems that there is no turning back from the implementation thereof. For this reason, two goals have been set in the article. The first is to build and verify a research model based on the TOE model (Technology-Organization-Environment), allowing for the identification of the determinants (drivers) influencing the assimilation of the robotic process automation by enterprises. The second goal is to develop recommendations for the managers responsible for implementing the RPA tools that will allow for increasing the assimilation of the robotic process automation. The following methods were used to accomplish these goals: literature research, a survey (conducted on 267 Polish enterprises) and statistical analysis (with the use of the structural equation models).

Recent studies show that the success rate of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) projects is between 50 and 70%. In cases where they are not successful, most failures are caused by organizational factors, i.e., people and their social environment. People in the organization have a significant influence on the success of a RPA project. Likewise, the implementation of RPA will bring some implications to them as well. This research is a preliminary study on visualization socio-human implications (VoSHI) in the RPA projects. As one of the office automation technologies, the application of RPA provides economic benefits and social implications. Unfortunately, most studies highlight the benefits and lack discussions on the impact of RPA on humans. This paper presents a systematic mapping study to analyze the current state-of-the-art on this topic, recognizing the socio-human implications of RPA implementations described in the literature. The research analyzed 56 primary studies selected from both academic digital libraries and grey literature. The results showed 16 positive and 6 negative implications of RPA implementations for humans and their social environment. Furthermore, this research also found 6 positive and 13 negative inputs contributed by humans, which can influence RPA implementations.

Robotic Process Automation as a Digital Transformation Tool for Increasing Organizational Resilience in Polish Enterprises

The current digital transformation (additionally accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic) is causing profound changes across a number of industries. Part of this revolution is the spread of Robotic Process Automation (RPA), which enables the automation of business processes by replacing human work with advanced software robots. One of the goals of the conducted research was to develop a classification of approaches to RPA positioning in enterprises. The author also identified differences in RPA positioning between individual industries. Based on conducted literature research, the author has proposed a proprietary classification for approaches to RPA positioning: conservative, efficiency improving, and strategic. This was subject to verification based on the results of empirical research using multidimensional correspondence analysis. The survey was conducted by the author in 2020 using the CAWI method: Credible (reliable) results were obtained from 238 Polish enterprises. The multidimensional correspondence analysis, conducted on the basis of the results of the empirical research confirmed that the approaches to RPA positioning in enterprises proposed by the author did occur in business practice. The outcome of the RPA classification became the basis for qualitative research (in the form of semi-structured interviews with expert practitioners) aimed at answering the question as to whether enterprises that strategically position RPA and treat it as a tool for digital transformation increase their organizational resilience. Up until now, however, no study has been found that focuses on how RPA increases organizational resilience or what its consequences are both at the research and application levels. This article fills the research gap in this area.
