Automatic Gaze Analysis: A Survey of Deep Learning based Approaches

Abstract: Eye gaze analysis is an important research problem in the field of Computer Vision and Human-Computer Interaction. Even with notable progress in the last 10 years, automatic gaze analysis still remains challenging due to the uniqueness of eye appearance, eye-head interplay, occlusion, image quality, and illumination conditions. There are several open questions including what are the important cues to interpret gaze direction in an unconstrained environment without prior knowledge and how to encode them in real… Show more

“…With the swift rise in vehicle numbers in recent decades, traffic accidents and congestion have become increasingly prevalent and pronounced [2]. Driver visual, auditory, bio-mechanical, and cognitive distractions account for more than half of all accidents [3]. However, in recent years, significant advancements have been made in the development of Automated Driving Systems (ADS) with the aim of enhancing road safety.…”

“…Eye Gaze: There exists a large body of work on eye gaze including estimation [15], tracking [16], forecasting [17], and using eye gaze for applications such as action recognition [3] and human-robot interaction [18], [19]. We briefly cover applications that make use of eye gaze.…”
