“…Rib fracture represents an important indicator of trauma severity; the number of fractured ribs increases morbidity and mortality [12] . Multidetector computed tomography (CT) provides a more accurate assessment to evaluate for the presence of rib fractures when standard posteroanterior (PA) chest radiograph is specific but insensitive [12] , [13] , [14] , [15] . Definite diagnosis (counting) of the number of rib fractures is also an important indicator in forensic examination for degree of disability [ 14 , 16 , 17 ].…”

“…Accurate evaluation of rib fractures is very important for clinical treatment and judicial practice. Previous studies have shown that the accuracy of CT diagnosis for rib fractures was around 70e90%; however, most studies established the reference standard based on initial CT results or clinical physical examinations, 16,17 which may be inaccurate and questionable because of personal subjective bias. It is difficult to detect subtle or occult fractures on early CT several days after chest trauma; however, 2 weeks later after rib fractures occur, the bone is absorbed at the fracture end, the fracture line becomes clear, and the bone density increases with callus formation; thus, the signs of fracture will be more obvious.…”

“…Although the diagnostic differences among observation strategies were statistically significant as indicated by the McNemar test, there was high observation consistency and kappa-test consistency, therefore, the real detection rate differences were very small, ranging from 76.2% to 80.8%. Urbaneja et al 17 compared the difference between cylindrical projection reconstruction (UCP) and traditional MPR in the diagnosis of rib fractures, and revealed that UCP can significantly shorten the reading time, with slightly increased sensitivity. Glemser et al 23 discovered that the expanded CT images took less time than the axial images, but the detection rate was reduced.…”

“…Dedicated software that permits unfolded reconstructions of the rib can aid to detect fractures in polytraumatized patients in a shorter time (38). Although it isn't better for detecting fractures (39), 3D evaluation can better depict relationship of fracture fragments and guide surgical management if necessary.…”
