“…Quantitative assessment of the TB, GM, WM, cerebellar, V3, and LV volumes were performed based on histogram analyses, followed by mathematical morphological operators in the 3D fast field echo image, using the intracranial volume as mask. 34,35 In addition, for the cerebellum and V3 and LV volumes, anatomical knowledge-based selection principles were used. For the cerebellum, this included a plane perpendicular to the sagittal plane through the aqueduct.…”

“…35 Briefly, T1-weighted 3D fast field echo and T2-weighted dual echo turbo spin echo scans of the whole head were acquired on a Philips Gyroscan running at 1.5 T for volumetric measurements (Philips Medical Systems, 35 and Schnack et al 57,58 ). Gray matter volume could not be estimated for four individuals, due to subject motion during the scan (two subjects with ADHD, two unaffected siblings).…”

“…The 3D-FFE images were then corrected for magnetic field inhomogeneities (8) and the DE-TSE images were registered to the 3D-FFE images (9). Brain volume measures were calculated using in-house-developed automated computer programs based on intensity histogram analysis followed by mathematical morphology operators in the DE-TSE and 3D-FFE images, using the intracranial volume as a mask (10). In addition, for the lateral and third ventricular volumes, anatomical knowledge-based selection principles were used.…”

“…Automatic decision rules bridged connections that were not detectable and prevented "leaking" into cisterns. Coronal slices that clearly showed the anterior and posterior commissures limited the third ventricle, and the upper boundary was a plane through the plexus choroideus of the third ventricle perpendicular to the midsagittal slice (10). GM and WM segmentation of the cerebrum (total brain excluding the stem/cerebellum) was done by one rater thresholding the 3D-FFE images twice, using randomization of images between each iteration.…”
