Automation Inner Speech as an Anthropomorphic Feature Affecting Human Trust: Current Issues and Future Directions

Abstract: This paper aims to discuss the possible role of inner speech in influencing trust in human–automation interaction. Inner speech is an everyday covert inner monolog or dialog with oneself, which is essential for human psychological life and functioning as it is linked to self-regulation and self-awareness. Recently, in the field of machine consciousness, computational models using different forms of robot speech have been developed that make it possible to implement inner speech in robots. As is discussed, robo… Show more

“…Our findings also indicate the need for speech synthesizers to be able to produce utterances with varying degrees of breathiness in varying positions, an ability which exists for HMMbased TTS [35] but it is yet to be added to state-of-the-art neural synthesizers. For example, effective spoken-language interaction with robots [36] will likely need this: to be able to distinctively produce both self talk [37], intended to unobtrusively give status updates to the user, and user-directed talk, needing im-mediate attention; and also able to clearly distinguish between the activity of establishing common ground and the activities of drawing conclusions and reaching decisions, for the sake of effectively coordinating joint action [38].…”

“…Suggestive results were also obtained in passing the mirror test: inner speech enables a conceptual reasoning for inferring the identity of the reflected entity in a mirror, and robot becomes able to recognize itself [ 8 ]. In a previous paper [ 9 ], we argued that robot’s inner speech might act as a facilitator for human understanding and predicting the robot behaviors, as they form adequate mental representation of the robot. As a matter of fact, mind perceptions consist of two core dimensions: (1) agency, e.g.…”
