An automated design data archiving could reduce the time wasted by designers from working creatively and effectively. Though many datasets on classifying, detecting, and instance segmenting on car exterior exist, these large datasets are not relevant for design practices as the primary purpose lies in autonomous driving or vehicle verification. Therefore, we release GP22, composed of car styling features defined by automotive designers. The dataset contains 1480 car side profile images from 37 brands and ten car segments. It also contains annotations of design features that follow the taxonomy of the car exterior design features defined in the eye of the automotive designer. We trained the baseline model using YOLO v5 as the design feature detection model with the dataset. The presented model resulted in an mAP score of 0.995 and a recall of 0.984. Furthermore, exploration of the model performance on sketches and rendering images of the car side profile implies the scalability of the dataset for design purposes.

Systematic Analysis of Changing Vehicle Exterior Dimensions and Relevant Vehicle Proportions

For the user perception of vehicles and consequently the success of automobile design, the body layout and especially the proportions of vehicles are pivotal. In the present study, the SAE main dimensions length (L108), wheelbase (L101), height (H100) and width (W103) of 697 vehicles from different OEMs were examined. The analysis reveals a tendency of increasing length, wheelbase and especially width of vehicles in recent years. Regarding the ratios of these dimensions there are clear correlations, as revealed by an analysis with linear regression. We find particular strong synchrony in the increases of the pairs W103 - L108 and L101 - L108 and lesser so between the ratio E = L108/L101 and the vehicle length. The latter can be explained by vehicles with a high L108 being less compact, i.e. the proportion E increases. Finally, it is discussed whether technological changes lead to revolutionary or evolutionary changes in dimensions. The historical development and the moderate proportional changes of BEVs indicate a measurable but evolutionary development. In contrast, disruptive technologies such as automated driving can significantly change the vehicle layout and thus encourage a more revolutionary change in proportions.

The derivation of a battery electric vehicle (BEV) architecture represents a challenging task for car manufacturers. For the early development of combustion engine architectures, the required design parameters can be derived from the analysis of previously-built model series. Regarding BEV architectures, the manufacturers do not yet have a reference series of vehicles on the basis of which they can derive the essential design parameters. Therefore, these parameters are mainly estimated at high cost in the early development phase. To avoid cost-intensive changes in the further course of development it is crucial to choose the right set of design parameters. For this reason, the aim of this paper is the identification of a minimum set of design parameters, derived from the current state-of-the-art of vehicle development by a structured literature comparison. We group the results according to our definition of vehicle architecture and discuss each identified parameter to explain its relevance. The sum of all parameters presented in this paper builds a minimum set of design parameters, which can be employed as a guideline for the definition of BEV architectures in the early development stage.
