Autonomic nerve function in adults with cyclic vomiting syndrome: a prospective study

Abstract: The results of this study suggest that the majority of subjects (90%) with CVS have impairment of the sympathetic nervous system with postural tachycardia and/or sudomotor dysfunction while parasympathetic nerve function appears to be intact. These findings of dysautonomia in CVS have implications in both the diagnosis and treatment of these patients.

“…A well-recognised hypothesis is that CVS is caused by psychological or infectious triggers, which lead to alterations in autonomic brain-gut pathways 7 8. The association between CVS and migraine headache also supports an underlying stress-sensitive disorder,9 with a common pathophysiological mechanism.…”

“…Abnormal vagal modulation of the heart has been described in patients [5][6][7] with tachygastria noted on electrogastrography [8,9]. CVS is associated with migraines.…”

“…The cause is likely a result of disorders of the central neural pathways and neuroendocrine mediators involved in the brain-gut pathways of nausea and vomiting [3]. There is also some evidence to suggest underlying abnormalities in the mitochondria [5][6][7] and the autonomic nervous system [8][9][10][11][12].…”
