Autonomous ships for container shipping in the Arctic routes

Abstract: This study investigates the competitiveness of various autonomous ship categories for container shipping in the Arctic route. We propose a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework using four ship categories as alternatives and eight criteria for competitiveness evaluation. We analyse collected data using the Best–Worst Method (BWM), one of the recently developed MCDM methods. The findings reveal that operating expenses, navigation aspects, and environmental protection are the three most important criter… Show more

“…BWM can evaluate the optimal weights of the challenges by considering the consistency of the results 39 . BWM technique has been widely used by various researchers in different applications such as ship selection for container shipping, 40 sustainability assessment of onshore wind plants 41 and challenges in the implementation of industry 4.0, 42 and so forth. The steps involved in BWM are given as follow: Step 1 : Identify and collect the challenges (),,,C1C2CN to LCA. Step 2 : Select the best and worst challenge to LCA.…”

“…According to Rolls-Royce (Mooney 2015), MASS can achieve a 20% reduction in fuel costs. Additionally, removal of crew from the vessels can uncover opportunities for transporting cargo using new routes, such as through the Arctic region (Munim et al 2021).…”

“…Though the research broadly described about different levels of autonomous vessel, the appropriate one is not identified (Flokkou 2021 ). Munim, Ziaul Haque in his paper ‘Autonomous ships for container shipping in the Arctic routes’ analyzed the competitiveness of several autonomous vessels and find out the appropriate vessel for the arctic region using the opinions of the expertise, in this research he used MCDM technique for data analysis (Munim et al 2020 ). The study covers important criteria for shipping, but didn’t emphasize the collision avoidance ability, which is crucial for safe navigation.…”
