Autophagy regulation using luteolin: new insight into its anti-tumor activity

Abstract: Application of novel methods in cancer therapy is important in terms of management and treatment of the life-threatening disorder. It appears that autophagy is a potential target in cancer therapy, as a variety of drugs targeting autophagy have shown great potential in reducing the viability and proliferation of cancer cells. Autophagy is primarily a catabolic process which provides energy during starvation. Besides, this process contributes to the degradation of aged or potentially toxic components and organe… Show more

“…Autophagy plays a "double-edged sword" in tumor progression. Autophagy can not only eliminate misfolded proteins or damaged organelles to maintain tumor growth, but induce autophagic programmed cell death in tumor cells (Ashrafizadeh et al, 2020;Maiti and Hait, 2021). Autophagy is a dynamic process, including the formation of phagosomes and autophagosomes, the combination of autophagosomes and lysosomes to form autophagolysosomes and the degradation of autophagolysosomes.…”

“…The luteolin is a natural flavonoid that can suppress cancer progression via regulating autophagy [ 221 ]. The luteolin suppresses Akt/mTOR axis to reduce MMP-9 expression, impairing metastasis and invasion of breast cancer cells [ 222 ].…”

“…It is worth mentioning that Res enhances LC-3II, Beclin-1 and ATG7 expression levels in triggering autophagy in CSCs and reducing breast cancer progression [ 353 ]. It is worth mentioning that autophagy has both tumor-promoting and tumor-suppressor roles in cancer [ 221 , 354 , 355 ] and its induction by Res requires more clarification.…”

“…Luteolin, a phase I metabolite of apigenin, is a flavone contained in different plants such as sage, carrots, and fennel [124][125][126]. Recently published papers have indicated the anti-cancer activities of luteolin in multiple cancer types by inducing autophagy or suppressing cancer cell proliferation [127,128]. According to a study, Coombs et al, the pretreatment of luteolin on breast cancer cells significantly downregulated the IFN-γ-induced PD-L1 expression [87].…”
