Sustainable production aims at creating products from processes that minimize environmental impact, energy consumption and natural resources. Customers and markets are ever more leaning towards digital, custom, and flexible solutions with lower environmental impact. Hence, Industry 4.0 (I4.0) solutions are increasingly including social and environmental sustainability aspects. We focus on the realization of an infrastructure integrating industrially relevant application modules by combining system reconfigurability and artificial intelligence, towards sustainable production. To meet the final goal of sustainable production, we address four challenges considering flexibility and sustainability in production in a holistic way: (1) developing infrastructural and methodological tools to support companies to explore the potential of I4.0 towards sustainable production; (2) managing the configurability and customization possibilities of products; (3) effectively handling the flexibility provided by a production system with rapid reconfiguration capabilities; (4) integrating hardware and software flexibility by using reconfigurable robotics and machine learning methods. By developing and connecting different application modules, we obtain a physical demonstrator which represents on the one hand an exemplary scenario of reconfigurable and flexible production system; on the other, it enables new research activities and insights with a see, touch & feel approach for industrial and research realities.

Value chains have become increasingly complex, complicating the transition to a circular economy and the pursuit of sustainable development. This transition requires assessing economic, environmental, social, and governance dimensions. We conduct a systematic literature review to evaluate whether existing methodologies can effectively assess the circularity and sustainability of value chains according to these four critical dimensions. Our work identifies three critical aspects to improve value chain evaluation: (i) circular economy requires assessment of the entire value chains, (ii) lack of stakeholder integration hinders sustainable development, and (iii) the need for multilevel and multidimensional performance assessment results in complex and incomplete methodologies. These findings imply that restructuring value creation models and value chain networks is essential to facilitate the application of simplified methodologies, thereby promoting the widespread adoption of circularity and sustainability. Addressing these gaps would the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and benefit society in the long run.

The manufacturing sector is a major contributor to material consumption, pollution, and waste generation. Despite global actions and policies promoting sustainable development and circularity, the global economy has yet to show significant signs of change. This article introduces a framework designed to transform current value chains into collaborative networks, involving a wide range of stakeholders who take responsibility for the process. The study identifies key shortcomings of current systems‐thinking approaches, which often fail to effectively prioritise hotspots along the value chain and assess them from environmental, social, economic, and governance perspectives. The proposed framework addresses these gaps, contributing to a necessary paradigm shift towards sustainable production. The article utilises case examples from the photovoltaic and textile sectors to illustrate implementation. By creating an inclusive and enabling ecosystem, this framework empowers decision‐makers and stakeholders to develop resilient pathways through the co‐creation of initiatives and policies, aligning attitudes with sustainable production practices.
