Average Quasar Spectra in the Context of Eigenvector 1

Abstract: [LaTeX removed] Recent work has shown that it is possible to systematize quasar spectral diversity in a parameter space called ``Eigenvector 1'' (E1). We present median AGN spectra for fixed regions of the E1 (optical) parameter space (FWHM(H-beta) vs. equivalent width ratio RFE=W(FeII4570)/W(H-beta). Comparison of the median spectra for different regions show considerable differences. We suggest that an E1-driven approach to median/average spectra emphasizes significant differences between AGN, and offers mor… Show more

“…Variants of E1 were later found in several studies (e.g. Marziani et al 1996;Boroson 2002;Grupe 2004;Kuraszkiewicz et al 2002;Sulentic et al 2000bSulentic et al , 2002Yip et al 2004;Kovačević et al 2010;Kruczek et al 2011;Tang et al 2012;Wang et al 2006).…”

“…The higher dimensionality involves parameters that are observationally independent and that correspond to different physical processes (see the reviews by Sulentic et al 2000a and for more detailed discussions). Quasars occupy a well defined sequence in the "optical plane" of 4DE1 defined by the FWHM of the Hβ broad component and by the intensity ratio between Feiiλ4570 and Hβ, R FeII = I(Feiiλ4570)/I(Hβ) (Boroson & Green 1992;Sulentic et al 2002). The 4DE1 optical plane therefore offers a tool that allows for defining and identifying quasar populations or spectral types.…”

“…The best low-z composites come from Bachev et al (2004). This sample was large enough to permit constructing composite spectra for each of the five most populated 4DE1 bins (Sulentic et al 2002). The bin composites were then combined to produce two higher S/N composites for populations A and B. Low-z population A and B composites shown in the bottom panel of Fig.…”

“…We do not report M BH and L/L Edd estimates for individual sources, but follow the procedure developed in Sulentic et al (2002) and Marziani et al (2009), which involves producing high S/N composite spectra in the 4DE1 context. This was previously performed for our low-z control sample (Bachev et al 2004), where composites for the five most populated bins were generated.…”

“…Sulentic et al (2000; expanded the E1 trends into a 4-dimensional space involving optical, UV and X-ray measures. They also defined spectral types along a sequence occupied by AGN in an optical plane involving Feii and FWHM Hβ parameters (Sulentic et al 2002). Objects at extreme ends of the E1 sequence are very different at almost all wavelengths and median spectra computed in spectral bins within this plane emphasize systematic changes in broad line properties (Sulentic et al 2002(Sulentic et al , 2007.…”
