Avian Stress-Related Transcriptome and Selenotranscriptome: Role during Exposure to Heavy Metals and Heat Stress

Abstract: Selenium, through incorporation into selenoproteins, is one of the key elements of the antioxidant system. Over the past few years there has been increased interest in exploring those molecular mechanisms in chicken, responsible for the development of this protection system. In more detail, Cd/Pb poisoning and heat stress increase oxidation, mRNA levels of inflammatory proteins, and apoptotic proteins. Selenium seems to enhance the antioxidant status and alleviates these effects via upregulation of antioxidant… Show more

“…Several studies have confirmed the relationship between the inflammatory response of the immune organs and the expression of inflammatory cytokines [ 5 ]. The most effective role played by TNF-α, as the most important cytokine, is related to its potent cytoprotective and antioxidant activity in response to injuries [ 5 , 46 ], and activating lymphocytes and neutrophils to produce the other cytokines [ 47 ]. The TNF-α was down-regulated in the AST80 treatment but not in the AST40 or AST20 treatments.…”

“…The main environmental stressors are inadequate temperature, poor ventilation (high levels of ammonia and CO 2 ), increased dust levels, and insufficient lighting. Nutritional factors include the presence of mycotoxins in feed; oxidized fats; toxic metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg); whether there is an unbalanced diet (deficiencies in nutrients and trace elements such as Se, Zn, Mn, Cu, and vitamin overdosing); poor water quality; and the extensive use of coccidiostats and other drugs through feed or water (i.e., the risk of reducing antioxidant absorption) [ 60 , 61 ]. Internal stressors include vaccinations, as well as bacterial and viral infections.…”

“… Changes in performance (production efficiency): Heat stress greatly impact the feeding pattern of broiler chickens and this subsequently results into 33% decrease in body weight gain (Lara and Rostagno 2013) which further impairs the production efficiency of the chickens (Toyomizu et al 2019;Sumanu et al 2021b).  Immunocompetence: The immune responses of broiler chickens are impaired during heat stress due to the presence of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause cellular damage (Seremelis et al 2019). The body's defence mechanisms are weakened over a period of time due to the increased level of pro-inflammatory cytokines in circulation.…”
