Drought is one of the most distressing environmental stresses restraining the crop production . Drought undermines the plant growth from seedling to maturity and the studies have unveiled that the harmful impact of drought results in crops due to the damages perceived during crucial stages of development namely, germination, seedling development and flowering stages. Biometric elements and indices at an early growth stage could be employed in designing the selection criteria to figure out the drought tolerant genotypes. Breeding for drought-prone environments is constrained by lack of suitable selection indices of drought stress resistance. The present study was conducted to determine the reliability of in-vitro screening method for initiating drought breeding programme. Poly ethylene glycol (PEG) has been used often as abiotic stress inducer in many studies to screen drought tolerant germplasm. The present investigation was carried out to reveal the drought tolerance potential of 103 maize inbred lines by in-vitro screening under three levels of PEG levels viz., 0% as control, 10% and 20% and evaluating their effect on the root parameters like primary root length, number of seminals roots , number of lateral roots and root biomass. The seedlings exhibited a significant variation for all the traits analyzed. All the root parameters had highest value under control and had significant decline with increasing PEG concentrations (0% < 10% < 20%). The inbreds showing the best level of drought tolerance at all levels of PEG induced stress can be used as a source of drought tolerance for the improvement of drought tolerant hybrids . The variation among maize inbreds for these traits was found to be an ideal indicator to screen the drought tolerant genotypes at early growth stages.

A sustainable food waste management methodology has been proposed for the discarded seeds of avocados (Persia Americana mill) where starch is extracted from the seeds through a microwave assisted heating process using only water, and this starch is modified through chemical treatment into acrylamide starch and carboxymethylated starch. Native as well as modified variants of starch are characterized using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which confirms the extraction of native starch and its chemical modification. The extracted and modified variants are then analyzed for their antioxidant properties against oxidative stress by checking their scavenging activity against DPPH (2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl). Moreover, the three variants of starch are tested for hemolytic activity in order to determine whether they are harmful to human blood, finally these three variants are checked for their activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus bacteria, the root cause in most cases of bacterial infection in humans. The starch variants are found to be excellent antioxidants and all three starch variants indicate a very low hemolytic activity and significant antibacterial activity in comparison to widely used antibiotic Ciproflaxin. All these results indicate that avocado seeds waste can be an excellent non‐conventional source of starch that can be used for sustainable applications in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Tarihte birçok farklı isimle anılan avokado (Persea americana Mill), Amerika'dan gelen tropikal bir meyvedir. En büyük üreticisi Meksika olup günümüzde birçok farklı ülkede üretimi yapılmaktadır. Ülkemizdeki avokado üretimi de hızla artmaktadır ve üretim son 19 yılda 14 kat artarak 2019 yılında 4209 tona ulaşmıştır. Yüksek besin içeriği ve sağlığa yararlı etkilerinin yanı sıra tıbbi amaçlar için de yetiştirilen bu meyve birçok araştırmacının odak noktası olmuştur. Avokado yapısında yüksek düzeyde (ortalama %15) yağ içeren nadir meyvelerden biridir ve yağın bileşimi zeytinyağı ile büyük benzerlik göstermektedir. Bunun yanında, meyve, farklı yağ asitleri, vitaminler, mineraller, karotenoidler ve diğer fitokimyasallar gibi temel besinler açısından oldukça zengin bir bileşime sahiptir. Yapılan araştırmalarda, avokadonun yapısında bulunan biyoaktif bileşiklerin antimikrobiyal, antiinflamatuvar, antikanser, antidiyabetik ve antihipertansif gibi sağlığa yararlı etkileri olduğu ve özellikle kolesterolü düşürmede ve kardiyovasküler hastalıkları önlemede avokado tüketiminin önemli olduğu ifade edilmektedir. Tüm bu yararlı etkileri nedeniyle avokadonun son 10 yılda üretimi ve günlük diyette tüketimi önemli ölçüde artmıştır. Bu derlemede avokadonun tarihçesi, çeşitleri, üretimi, bileşimi ve içerdiği biyoaktif bileşenlerin sağlığa etkileri ele alınmıştır.
