Background and objectives:Obesity and overweight is a growing pandemic affecting millions of adolescents in developed as well as developing countries. Obesity is associated with the onset of major chronic diseases leading to complications and also psychosocial problems in adolescents. The greater concern is that the risks of obesity during childhood will persist into adolescence and adulthood. The objectives of the study were to assess the prevalence of being overweight and obesity and to study the associated risk factors.Materials and Methods:1900 adolescents in the age group of 10–19 years were included in the study. A predesigned and pretested questionnaire which included the variables such as going to school by bus or cycle, eating habits, playing video/computer games or outdoor games and sibling count were recorded. Body weight and height were recorded in subjects for calculating body mass index (BMI). International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) classification was used for the estimation of being overweight and obese.Results:The mean age of the study subjects was 14.84 years (SD = 2.81). Mean weight increased from 34.7 to 55.09 kg from the age group 10–13 to 17–19 years. Mean height also increased from 1.34 to 1.57 m from the age group 10–13 to 17–19 years. Similarly, the mean body mass index was 19.23 at 10–13 years, followed by 21.11 at 14–16 years and 22.46 at 17–19 years. On binary logistic regression analysis, female gender, bus as a mode of transport, not playing games, and single sibling were found to have independent association with prevalence of being overweight.

Effect of Physical Activity on Prevalence of Risk for Obesity and Diabetes in School going Children and Adolescents

Aim: The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of physical activity on prevalence of risk for obesity and diabetes. Method: 2048 children had undergone questionnaire and dietary survey and health examination. Out of these, 1017 were from urban population and 1031 from rural population Children and adolescent aged 10-19 years were selected randomly for questioning regarding the different aspects of epidemiology and their health examination was done. Results: In the total population (2048), 35.21% children were performing > 60 minutes physical activities. Diabetic children are more in the category performing < 60 minutes of physical work. Boys were more physically active than girls. Overweight children were more in those performing <60 minutes activity. When the physical activity of rural and urban children is compared, urban children were inclined towards more sedentary behavior than rural children. Obese diabetic children were more in physically inactive category. Diabetic children were less physically active than normal ones. These findings indicated that promotion of physical activity is an important factor to prevent obesity and its related disorders. Subjects who were having impaired glucose levels were totally unaware of the diagnosis at the time of examination and physical inactive. Conclusion: Children can prevent the development of obesity and type -2 diabetes by increasing their level of physical activity. Childhood obesity can be prevented by living actively, eating in healthful ways and creating a nurturing environment.

Knock knee deformity and body mass index among the male school students of 9 to 13 years old of chandigarh, India

Study aim: To study knock knee deformity and the body mass index among male school students of Chandigarh, India. The study also intended to evaluate the association of knock knee deformity with BMI. Material and method: In total, 900 school students were selected, and out of these 300 each were from private, government model and government schools in slum areas. Convenient sampling was employed. The age of the subjects ranged from 9 to 13 years. Height, weight, BMI and intermalleolar distance of selected subjects were assessed. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA and correlation were employed. Results: The highest percentages of obese (11.3%) and overweight (15.3%) students were found in the private schools. The highest percentages of severe knock knee deformity (10.7%) were found in the students of the private schools, whereas 16.7% of students in the government model schools had moderate knock knee deformity. Height, weight and BMI were significantly correlated with knock knee deformity. Conclusion: Body weight among the school students might be associated with the school type, as the problem of obesity and underweight was pervasive in private and government schools. Knock knee deformity was related to the school type and body weight status.
