Axillary Basal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Axillary BCC is rare. Factors other than ultraviolet radiation likely contribute to the development of BCC, especially at sun-protected sites. Performing a periodic and complete cutaneous examination that includes sun-protected sites is important, especially in patients who have a history of skin cancer.

“…Many treatment methods, including surgery, laser, cryotherapy, electrocautery and radiotherapy, can be used in the treatment of skin cancer, and surgical treatment is the gold standard (1,4). The 5-year cure rate of surgical treatment can reach 90% or even higher, but these treatment methods are usually followed by a persistent recurrence rate, that even if treated successfully, are likely to affect the patient's appearance (12,13).…”

“…It usually occurs in the exposed parts of the human body, such as the neck, face and upper arm. The most common types are basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas (1). Local invasion by skin cancer cells can cause damage to the local tissues, generating deformations that affect the normal appearance of the patient (2).…”

“…Consequently, BCCs of the non-sun-exposed areas, such as axilla, nipple, or the genital and perianal areas are extremely rare. LeSueur et al4 investigated 10,000 BCCs and only 15 axillary BCCs (0.05%) were identified. With regard to the BCCs of the nipple, less than 30 cases were reported in the world5.…”

“…Le Sueur et al proposed that other covered sites might share the same characteristics. [5] Our case was a noduloulcerative type of BCC but the uncommon location of the lesion and absence of known risk factors (arsenic poisoning, radiation and family history) made the diagnosis challenging. It is not known whether prognosis of a BCC over an uncommon location is any better than those over usual site, but absence of any risk factor is a good prognostic factor.…”

“…[1] PS is commonest at natal cleft, but it is also reported at various unusual sites like the interdigital clefts of hands and toes, umbilicus, axilla, inter-mammary area, penis, clitoris, scalp, nose, and ear etc. [2][3][4][5] We report first extremely rare case of PS over both eyelids.…”
