“…Azithromycin has been primarily studied in the treatment of acne in open label studies with different pulse dosing regimens ranging from 3 times a week to 4 days a month, with azithromycin being an effective treatment in the time span evaluateddusually 2 to 3 months. 92,[197][198][199][200][201][202][203][204] A recent randomized controlled trial comparing 3 days per month of azithromycin to daily doxycycline did show superiority of doxycycline. 205 Macrolides as the penicillin class represent an alternative when traditional antibiotics cannot be used.…”

“…Given the current efficacy data, azithromycin shows to be an effective recommendation for the treatment of acne and may offer benefits of less frequent dosing and adverse events. Azithromycin is safe for use in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, whereas all tetracyclines are contraindicated in pregnancy (36). As use of erythromycin and clindamycin are waning secondary to increased resistance of P. acnes to these agents (37), it may be helpful to have another oral option available for patients who do not respond to, cannot tolerate, or have contraindications to tetracycline therapy.…”
