Azoic Dye Hosted in Layered Double Hydroxide: Physicochemical Characterization of the Intercalated Materials

Abstract: Intercalation compounds were obtained by introduction of guest methyl orange (MO) into the interlayer space of host Mg/Al and Ni/Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Three synthesis methods of organic anion-LDH intercalation compounds, i.e., coprecipitation, reconstruction of the MII(Al)O mixed oxides, and anion exchange of LDH, were compared. The former method gives rise to a highly organized MO-intercalated Mg/Al LDH with an interlayer spacing of 2.43 nm and up to seven (00l) reflection orders. Reconstructio… Show more

“…In recent years, LDH as a layered nanostructure has drawn considerable attention owing to its various unique properties, not common in layered silicates. LDH is a host–guest material consisting of positively charged metal hydroxide sheets with intercalated anions as guest and water molecules . It can be represented by the general formula, [M 2+ 1‐x M 3+ x (OH) 2 ] A n− x/n yH 2 O, where M 2+ and M 3+ are divalent and trivalent metal cations, such as Mg 2+ and Al 3+ , respectively, and A n− are interlayer anions, such as CO 3 2− , Cl ‐ , and NO 3 − .…”

“…), and A n− is the exchangeable anion. They are well known ion-exchangers/adsorbents for dyes/colorants (Bergaya et al, 2006;Mandal et al, 2009;Chakraborty et al, 2011;Wang and O'Hare, 2012). However, application of this group of materials in the process of leather dyeing is not known.…”
