B-Cube, behavioural modelling of technical artefacts

Abstract: A new model, B-Cube, is described for managing knowledge at the behaviour level of the function-behaviour-structure framework. The model proposes a three-dimensional approach to the behavioural modelling of technical artefacts using definitions based mainly on the meta-ontology DOLCE as behaviour concepts. The present work aims to show the complementarity between these terms and those from the NIST functional basis in functional design, assuming that this model achieves similar objectives with behaviours to tho… Show more

“…Researchs concerning ontological models of product functionality and behavior are primarily aimed at engineering artifacts or devices [9,7,8,13,15,35,36,37,50]. The goal of this research is the description of the function and behavior engineering concepts of technical devices capturing the informal meanings that have the terms in the engineering practice.…”

“…The method consists of four phases which we describe in detail and exemplify by referring to the categories of PCBA and that of PCBA schematic drawing (SD). To show the generality of the method, we apply it to two quite different ontologies: the conceptual data model ISO 15926-2 [26,4], which was initially motivated by modeling concerns in construction and operation of oil and gas production facilities but is today applied to other domains as well [28,14]; and the foundational ontology DOLCE [30], which is used in areas like engineering design methodology [6,20], inventive design [50] and manufacturing [10,7]. For reviews on ontologies and semantic standards see [1,43,7,18] and references therein.…”
