Studies on Erysipelosis I. Infectivity and Immune Response of Albino Mice (ddN‐Stock) to Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae

Abstract

Summary Experimental erysipelosis in mice (albino ddN‐stock) induced by the highly virulent Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae strain AGATA was characterized by the activation of the reticuloendothelial system and pathological changes in the heart in addition to general septicaemic changes. The results of the examination for the distribution of the organisms in various organs by quantitative cultivation, showed that the number of organisms in the heart was larger than in various other organs. Consequently, the authors consider that attention should be directed specifically to the findings in the heart in the case of experimental erysipelosis in mice. When inoculated into mice, the organisms of strain CHIRAN, an acriflavin attenuated strain, were distributed widely in the body and their presence was proved even after 3 months, though they did not show any rapid multiplication. Histopathologically, the reaction at the site of inoculation was mild, and serious pathological changes were absent in all the various organs. In two groups of mice which were challenged 8 days and 3 months after preinoculation respectively, all the mice survived the challenge, both groups showing no difference in apparent resistance. From the results of bacterial counting in the organs, however, multiplication of the challenge organisms was apparent in different parts of the body in the groups receiving the preinoculation 8 days previously, while it was lacking or very slight in the group receiving the preinoculation 3 months previously. Further, the pathological changes at the site of inoculation were evident only in the mice of the former group. Zusammenfassung Studien über Rotlauf Empfänglichkeit und Immunitätsbildung von weißen Mäusen (ddN‐Stamm) gegenüber Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae Weiße Mäuse (ddN‐Stamm) wurden mit dem hochvirulenten Rotlaufstamm Agata infiziert. Als charakteristische Symptome zeigten sich eine Aktivierung des Retikuloendothels und pathologische Veränderungen des Herzens in Verbindung mit allgemeinen septikämischen Veränderungen. Die Prüfung der quantitativen Verteilung der Bakterien in verschiedenen Organen ergab, daß die Mehrzahl sich im Herzen befand. Bei dem experimentellen Rotlauf der Mäuse sollte daher dem Befund am Herzen besondere Aufmerksamkeit zugewendet werden. Wurden Bakterien vom Stamm Chiran, mit Acriflavin verdünnt, an Mäuse verimpft, so verteilten sie sich im gesamten Tierkörper. Sie konnten noch nach drei Monaten nachgewiesen werden, obwohl sie sich nicht schnell vermehrten. Histopathologisch war die Reaktion der Impfstelle gering, ebenso fehlten ernsthafte pathologische Veränderungen in allen Organen. Von zwei Gruppen Mäusen, von denen eine acht Tage, die andere drei Monate nach der Erstinfektion reinfiziert wurde, überlebten alle Tiere. Beide Gruppen zeigten keine Unterschiede hinsichtlich der Resistenz.
