“…In a review of B. cereus by Steen et al (123), they noted that the rates of morbidity and mortality associated with B. cereus endocarditis were high among patients with valvular heart disease (20,29,105,121). In the course of their review, those authors noted that 10 cases of endocarditis had been previously reported: 6 were drug addicts (including that reported by Craig et al), 1 had a pacemaker, and the remaining cases had valvular disease.…”

“…Some cases of bacteraemia and septicaemia followed accidental trauma from road-traffic, industrial and domestic accidents or from burns; others were associated with drug addiction (see Borchardt et al, 1982). Of nine cases of endocarditis, six occurred in drug addicts (Siegman-Igra et al, 1983) and three were associated with heartvalve replacements (Oster and Kong, 1982;Parry et al, 1983). Despite the seriousness of these systemic infections, and the debilitated state of many of the patients, the prognoses were good and all but two, one of whom was immunocompromised by chemotherapy for leukaemia, recovered.…”

“…Most cases of Bacillus spp. endocarditis have involved native valves, but rare cases of prosthetic valve endocarditis have been reported, with B. cereus, B. circulans and B. licheniformis [12][13][14][15][16][17]. Notably, complete recovery was achieved after valve replacement surgery, while medical management in one case resulted in patient death [15].…”
