Bactericidal paper trays doped with silver nanoparticles for egg storing applications

Abstract: In this study, a cost-effective way to deposit the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on paper egg trays was developed, which proved suitable for prolonged storage of table eggs for house-hold use without deterioration of egg quality. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized based on chemical reduction approach and mixed with gelatinchitosan mixer used as a colloidal stabilizer as well as fixing agent. AgNPs-doped paper egg trays were characterized by TEM, SEM, FTIR, EDX and XRD. AgNPs containing egg trays were tested … Show more

“…Attracted by the huge economic benefit, many strategies have been studied for egg preservation, which can be generally classified into two types based on the mechanism. The first one is to deactivate the microorganisms on the eggshells, including techniques such as ultrasonic treatment [5], ozone treatment [6], application of AgNPs-doped paper egg trays [7], and vacuum packaging [8]. The other one is to seal the pores on eggshells by coating, which serves as good barrier layers towards water vapor, gases, and microorganisms.…”

“…Albumen quality index (AQI) is a physical measure of observed freshness (quality) of an egg when broken and observed on a at surface. As egg deteriorates and looses its freshness, albumen index decreases and the unruptured structural thick white albumen spreads out on at surface, judged by the height and area occupied (Viswanathan et al, 2016). Observed AQI values in present work are high (> 88%) and assures high quality for eggs layed.…”

“…As this study shows, nanosilver is not able to replace efficiently functioning ventilation but may be an element supporting the elimination of gaseous contaminants. (Banach et al 2016) [8] [35] Increased storage performance in the eggs zinc oxide packing materials Akbar and Anal 2014 [5] Active against Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus…”
