Baicalein: A review on its anti‐cancer effects and mechanisms in lung carcinoma

Abstract: Plant-derived flavonoids are reported to function as potential anti-cancer agents against different types of cancer. Baicalein (BE) is an important flavonoid found in the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis that is popularly used in Chinese medicine as an ingredient in herbal tea preparations to promote wellness. BE has been studied for its several biological effects including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-hepatotoxic, antiviral, and anti-tumor properties. BE has now been discovered to be an effective agen… Show more

“…Baicalein, a flavonoid extracted from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis , has demonstrated substantial anti-tumor activity in recent in vivo and in vitro experiments, showing particular preventive and therapeutic effects on NSCLC ( 198 ). It has a wide anticancer spectrum, affects multiple cellular actions, and exhibits complex and diverse mechanisms, including the regulation of cell proliferation, metastasis, apoptosis, and autophagy ( 199 ).…”

“…In NSCLC (Non-small cell lung cancer) cells, Baicalein therapy activates AMPKα/MEK/ERK1/2 signaling cascades by triggering phosphorylation, which cross-talks between FOXO3a and RUNX3 (RUNX family transcription factor 3) [ 25 ]. Additionally, Baicalein treatment reduces the expression of Caveolin-1 (cav-1) in prostate cancer cells, DU145, and PC-3 cells, resulting in the downregulation of AKT and mTOR levels.…”

“…Additionally, Baicalein prevented the growth of various chemotherapy cancers in mouse models [ 25 ]. When used in conjunction with chemotherapy, Baicalein could be established as a novel anti-cancer medication to treat cancers [ 26 ].…”

“…Additionally, wogonin has been reported to inhibit HCC proliferation by affecting nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB)/B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and the EGFR downstream ERK/AKT signal pathway[ 5 ]. Furthermore, baicalein has been reported to inhibit cancer progression by inducing autophagy, apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in HCC cell lines[ 34 ]. Similarly, the long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs)-hsa-miR-4443-AKT1 pathway responds positively to baicalein treatment[ 35 ].…”
