TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractBarite sag is a well recognized, but poorly understood phenomenon in the drilling industry. Historically it has been associated with a static well environment; consequently test devices and rheological measurements were originally based on static conditions. Dynamic barite sag is now recognized as the major contributor to sag-related drilling problems. There are two prominent variables conducive to creating dynamic sag; 1) low shear rate conditions (drilling process-related) and 2) insufficient ultra-low shear rate viscosity (drilling fluidrelated). Dynamic sag is not entirely a mud-related problem and, under certain conditions, will occur despite appropriate control of drilling fluid viscosity.Barite sag is typically attributed to the mud system and the traditional approach to manage barite sag is to modify (increase) certain rheological properties of the mud system. These efforts are often frustrating because; 1) the proposed solution is ineffective, 2) the solution creates a new problem such as ECD management and 3) expectations are not met. This paper proposes that dynamic sag is related to both the drilling process and drilling fluid, and that these two variables cannot be treated independently from one another.

Impact of Perlite on the Properties and Stability of Water-Based Mud in Elevated-Temperature Applications

Barite settling is one of the common drilling fluid issues encountered while drilling deep wells. In this study, the effect of perlite on the properties and stability of water-based drilling fluid was investigated. Perlite is an inexpensive additive used in different industrial applications such as bricks, concrete, thermal insulators, sludge absorbents, fillers, tiles, ruminants, and poultry. Perlite additive was also introduced to the oil industry in drilling applications as an effective fluid loss control agent to reduce the drilling fluid invasion into the formations. Perlite was added to the drilling fluid in various concentrations, ranging between 0 and 3.0 lb/bbl. The sag test was performed to assess the drilling fluid’s stability under dynamic and static conditions at a temperature of 120/250 °F. Then, the impact of perlite on the properties of drilling fluid was assessed by measuring the density and pH at room temperature. While the rheological, viscoelastic, and filtration properties were evaluated at 250 °F. This study showed that an increase in perlite concentration, from 0 to 3 lb/bbl, slightly reduced the pH of the drilling mud; however, all of the values were within the acceptable pH range (9–11). In contrast, this concentration of perlite had an immeasurable impact on drilling fluid density. Perlite enhanced the drilling fluid’s homogeneity and stability by reducing the dynamic and static sag factors, and 3.0 lb/bbl perlite was adequate to eliminate barite sag at a temperature up to 250 °F. Perlite was found to be effective in improving the rheological and viscoelastic properties. A significant enhancement of filtration properties was observed by the reduction in filtrate volume and filter cake thickness by 64 and 31%, respectively.

AbstractDrilling in deep water environments, such as the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), presents the potential for a variety of wellbore and operational problems.Wellbore stability, rates-ofpenetration (ROP), hole cleaning, and pressure management are but a few of the key operational parameters affected by the choice of drilling fluid for a given well. Synthetic-base muds (SBM) provide excellent wellbore stability and maximum ROP, particularly in combination with PDC bits. Conversely, management of equivalent circulating density (ECD), pump initiation and surge pressures are more difficult to control with SBM due to the effects of temperature and pressure on rheological properties. The inability to effectively control these drilling parameters can result in catastrophic lost circulation events, which negatively impact operating costs arising from non-productive time (NPT), as well as the high unit cost of the SBM. This paper highlights the development and application of a new constant-rheology synthetic-based mud (CR-SBM), designed to overcome the problems associated with pressure management when using SBM in deepwater operations. Unlike conventional SBM, this new fluid exhibits a "constant rheology" profile under the conditions encountered in deepwater operations. With the fluid's constant rheology profile, downhole surge pressures and ECD are minimized, thus reducing the frequency and severity of lost circulation events. In addition, the CR-SBM has consistently facilitated delivery of hole cleaning and barite suspension objectives in directional wells.The CR-SBM presented in this paper is unique in the sense that the near constant profile of key rheological properties was achieved using organophilic clay and without the use of special emulsifiers. In general, the components of the CR-SBM are the same as conventional SBM. Case histories are presented that demonstrate the degree to which the new CR-SBM increases deepwater operational efficiency by reducing downhole mud losses and non-productive time.
