Barley Varieties Stoneham and Sydney Exhibit Mild Antibiosis and Antixenosis Resistance to the Wheat Curl Mite, Aceria tosichella (Keifer)

Abstract: The wheat curl mite, Aceria tosichella (Keifer), devastates cereal crops worldwide by direct feeding damage and transmission of several deadly viruses. Deployment of cereal crop varieties resistant to A. tosichella is key for reduction of crop yield losses, and management of this mite and associated viruses that it transmits. Barley varieties resistant to A. tosichella are not known to exist. The objectives of this study were to determine if A. tosichella resistance exists in the barley varieties Sydney and St… Show more

“…Nucleic acid isolation has become an indispensable technique in insect pest research including taxonomic classification, population genetics, vector diagnostics, evolutionary studies, and insecticide-resistant mutant allele detection ( Aguirre-Rojas et al, 2019 , Altameme and Ibraheam, 2019 , Al-Saad and Aletby, 2018 ). A wide range of such studies require enormous samples, hundreds or even thousands at once, and DNA extraction then becomes a seizing step in research in terms of cost, time, and sophisticated equipment access.…”

“…This is the most significant economic impact of WCM on cereal yielding. As a result of WCM feeding or WSMV transmission on cereal leaves, the grain yield losses may reach up to 40% (Skoracka et al 2017(Skoracka et al , 2018aAguirre-Rojas et al 2019).…”

“…Arthropod pests are very important in affecting the world economy (Aguirre-Rojas et al, 2019;Zhao et al, 2019;Kern et al, 2022;Khalaf et al, 2023). The family of Aphididae is one of the arthropod families which plays an essential role in reducing many crops' yields worldwide due to causing direct damage to many hosts, and indirect damage by transmitting many agriculturally important plant viruses (Adhab, 2010(Adhab, , 2021Al-Ani et al, 2011a;Adhab & Schoelz, 2015;Adhab et al, 2019).…”

“…Searching for new sources of resistance to arthropods is a key factor to reduce the yield loss (Chuang et al, 2017;Aguirre-Rojas et al, 2019;Khalaf et al, 2019), due to a few studies have evaluated the behavior of eggplant genotypes under the stress of A. gossypii, this study amid to assess the resistance of 10 eggplant genotypes to A. gossypii to develop a sustainable agricultural and thus, improve the cotton aphid management.…”
