Basal cell carcinomas in elderly patients treated by cryotherapy

Abstract: Basal cell carcinoma is a malignant skin tumor with high incidence in our country, especially in rural areas, on sun-exposed skin (particularly on the face) in elderly patients. We present three cases of basal cell carcinoma with good results with cryotherapy. This report aims to outline and to prove that in some difficult situations, a simple, inexpensive, easy-to-perform procedure with no contraindications and with minimal side effects (erythema, mild pain) can be applied and resolve such cases.

“…Clinical implications of cryosurgery are mostly applied in BCC [32]. However, they hold limitations such as loss of pigmentation, loss of sensation, scarring loss of hair, and nerve damage in regions at the surgical site [33]. Among the available therapeutic modalities, radiation therapy is considered one of the best treatment options for skin cancer which controls the rate of tumor growth in about 87%-100% of cases for 2-5 years.…”

Cryoablation is a well-established routine therapeutic modality in current oncological practice in our country and abroad.…”

“…5 Cryotherapy is minimally-invasive, easy to perform, inexpensive, elicits minimal pain, can reach tumors in difficult locations, and can also be performed in elderly patients. 6 Based on outpatient medical records data from the Department of Dermatovenereology of Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia, from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2020, there were 55 BCC cases, with 13 of them having nodular subtype. This case report aims to report a case of nodular BCC treated with cryotherapy.…”
