We investigate the regional thermal structure of the crust in Mexico using Curie Point Depth (CPD) estimates. The top and bottom of the magnetized crust were calculated using the power-density spectra of the total magnetic field from the freely available ''Magnetic Anomaly Map of North America''. We applied this method to estimate the regional crustal thermal structure in overlapping square windows of 2°9 2°. The CPD estimates range between 10 and 40 km and show several regions of relatively shallow and deep magnetic sources, with a general inverse correlation with measured heat flow. A deep CPD region (20-30 km) is located in the fore-arc area where the subducting Cocos plate has a flat-slab geometry. This deep region is bound to the NW and SE by shallow CPD areas beneath the states of Michoacan (CPD = 12-16 km) and Oaxaca (CPD = *16 km), respectively. There is a good spatial correlation between this deep CPD area and two main fracture zones located on the incoming Cocos plate (Orozco and O'Gorman fracture zones), suggesting that subduction plays an important role in setting apart different CPD provinces along the Mexican coast. Another deep CPD (16-32 km) area corresponds to the region where the Rivera plate subducts beneath Jalisco block. The Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt is characterized by a decrease in Curie depths from west (16-20 km) to east (10-12 km). Finally, several deep CPD areas are situated in the back-arc region where old Mesozoic terrains are present. Our results suggest that the main control on the crust's regional thermal structure in the fore-arc and volcanic arc regions is due to the subduction of the Cocos and Rivera plates beneath Mexico.

C i e n A ñ o s ResumenLa extraordinaria diversidad magmática de la Faja Volcánica Transmexicana está controlada (directa o indirectamente) por dos placas oceánicas independientes cuyos parámetros geofísicos y composicionales se modifi can constantemente a lo largo de la trinchera, por un régimen tectónico esencialmente distensivo que opera con distinta intensidad sobre la placa continental, por un basamento cortical con diferentes edades, espesores y composiciones, y por una fuente mantélica primaria de composición extremadamente variable que ha sido infl uenciada, en mayor o menor medida, por los agentes químicos derivados de la subducción. El régimen tectónico convergente y, en consecuencia, el arco magmático, tampoco han evolucionado de forma homogénea a lo largo su historia, sino que han mostrado transformaciones notables en su posición, geometría y composición. The Chapala graben forms part of a regional system of intra-arc and half-grabens located along the western and central portions of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Results of a stratigraphic and tectonic study of the thick, widespread volcano-sedimentary sequence around the Chapala graben are reported. The study has concentrated on the distribution of lacustrine deposits and on the stratigraphy, geochronology, and deformation of the sequence. The volcano-sedimentary record suggests a probable link between the Tepic-Zacoalco and Chapala grabens through a basin system developed during late Miocene and early Pliocene time. The stratigraphic sections show a southward spatial migration of the basin (and lake) system. The main unit of the volcano-sedimentary succession is the Chapala Formation, which has been affected by northeast tilting, unlike the lacustrine deposits to the east in the Chapala plain (e.g., Ixtlan area), where the sequence is essentially flat lying. Two distinct units with different structural attitudes, separated by an angular unconformity, can be distinguished in the Chapala Formation. Based on differences between the stratigraphic sections and structural attitudes, we propose a model for development of the Chapala graben that involves a combination of left-lateral and extensional deformation, together with volcanic and erosional processes, all of which have contributed to shape the basin. Furthermore, we suggest that Lake Chapala is the remnant of a large Jalisco paleo-lake in westcentral Mexico.
